Embracing Inclusion: #Inclusion #Diversity #Growth 🌟🌱 Why is it that being inclusive seems like such a challenge? Can't we be exclusive in our expertise while also being inclusive in our approach? We may specialize in a certain field, but could we be open to listening, learning, and embracing suggestions from others? Experience doesn't mean shutting the door to new perspectives; it means recognizing the value in every voice. Even if we're the seasoned experts in our domains, there's always something to learn from someone who brings a fresh perspective. Just because "that's how things have always been done" doesn't mean there's no room for change. Inclusion isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about fundamentally understanding that we're all equal!! Just because one person knows more doesn't diminish the value of what others bring to the table. Keeping that window of opportunity open is what being truly inclusive is all about. And the best part? ”Diversity is a fact; inclusion is an act.” I had the pleasure of spending a few days with my European colleagues, discussing and sharing good practices on inclusion. ✨ Thank you to the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science for organizing this wonderful study visit. My takeaways on inclusion: 1. Remember the small things: Often, it's the small gestures that can make a big difference in creating an inclusive environment. Saying hello and showing genuine interest in others can foster a sense of belonging and community. 2. Acknowledge different needs: Recognizing that individuals have different needs and abilities is crucial for ensuring everyone feels valued and included. Providing accommodations and support allows everyone to contribute their unique strengths. 3. Create a safe and chill space: Building a safe and relaxed atmosphere is essential for promoting open communication and participation. When people feel comfortable, they're more likely to share their perspectives and ideas. 4. Use versatile methods for communication: Employing various communication methods ensures that everyone, regardless of their preferred style or ability, can effectively contribute and be heard. 5. Learn from others and be open to change: Embracing diversity means being willing to learn from different perspectives and experiences. Being open-minded and adaptable promotes growth. 6. Be curious and don't shy away from difficult conversations: Engaging in challenging discussions can lead to greater understanding and empathy. Encouraging curiosity and addressing sensitive topics respectfully can deepen connections and promote inclusivity.

How do we become more inclusive? You don’t. Because this Question makes no sense. #Inclusion is a feeling … so the mechanical idea of “becoming more inclusive” doesn’t fit with the natural intricacies of BEing human in interaction with other humans. We can, and need to ask Questions such as … “How can we Cultivate an Environment in which people feel recognised and accepted for who they are?” There is no guarantee. There never is. Without asking and actively working to cultivate such an environment, people are unlikely to feel they belong there, which ultimately describes the feeling of inclusion. Isn’t this what’s important for us all? It really is this simple. #ItReallyIsThisSimple #SimpleNotSimplistic

Inclusion isn't just a buzzword; it's a commitment we make to ensure that every voice is heard, every individual is respected, and everyone is empowered. If we truly want to evolve our culture, we must start from our behaviors, and this is what guided GHO’s first Inclusion Day event. We learned valuable insights from our guests on how our individual actions can contribute to building a more equal and respectful society and working environment. Daniele Dodaro moderated the event, guiding us through a journey of listening and reflection on what inclusion means , Francesca Folda shared her inspiring story, emphasizing the importance of listening and nurturing relationships with others approaching the unknown cultures across the world. Our colleagues Rosaria Teresa Acanfora and Michele Poretti explained the impact of being inclusive in their personal and professional lives. Lesson learned: Wherever we are, we are always surrounded by diverse individuals. Yet, on a deeper level, each of us can feel like a stranger in different contexts.
