Consumer Housing Advocate/Industry Advisor ⚜️ "Get's it". Done. Consumer advocacy for sustainable, national housing policy reform.
The #Tavern holds a few of my #secrets. 🙈 🙉 🙊 It holds a lot of secrets about a lot of good-ol’country types who like to have a little too much country fun from time- 2️⃣ -time. Within walking distance of two of my previous homes (“weather conditions permitting” - of course). ⛈ The tavern has borne witness to some of my saddest, strongest, baddest and fun-est moments over the decades. It is like a #house in this way. I'm glad the old Tavern walls don't talk. Or - at least - didn’t. Back then. 🗓 Back then - there was a jukebox 🎶 - and a shuffleboard table 🥌 crowding the already small Tavern. It never deterred anyone from dancing. 💃 Back in the day? Surviving the bathrooms was a badge of honor. The locals - all locals. Did what locals always do. 😁 Treat you with the same level of respect that you are affording them. Which explains why no one ever said anything about the bathrooms. 🚽 The bathrooms have been long renovated - a few times. More of a bar on the weekends - I am far too old to be here on a Friday or Saturday night. Well over a “certain age” - I have now, been relegated to the "lunch program”. Taverngoers of a certain age understand this well. 👴 👵 Before you seniors get too excited - there is no “blue-hair” 😰 specials at Larry’s Tavern. Even if Chuck and Cheryl are blue hairs themselves. It’s #bluecollar - 👷♂️ after #work 😲 hours. And people are pulling up in pickup trucks and picking up their own tabs. 👀 That’s how ya know. If we pay for your drink - as you get ready to go. We expect to see you again at Larry’s and other wandering holes across the globe. Like they sing from time-to-time at the TAVERN. It’s a #FAMILY #TRADITION. #Housing is a #human agenda. DESERT CAMP - A Limited Series Friday evening and the desert castles of Upper Canyon sparkle in the late winter alpenglow. An ultra-elegant, pedigreed community flourishes beneath Drinkwater and Thompson Peaks in North Scottsdale. This is one of the most contrarian fairytales ever. A hundred years ago, Fort McDowell and the surrounding area was a desolate, thorny outpost northeast of Phoenix, a land of dusty cattle trails, scorpions, and snakes. Proper society was miles away, in the established Central Corridor of Phoenix. Banished Cain. For the greater part of the last century, metro Phoenix was the place you moved to escape your past. Couldn’t make it anywhere else? Missed your chance in Hollywood? Running from a bad relationship or criminal past? Go to Phoenix and hide out amongst the saguaro and ocotillo. It’s amazing how things have changed. The Valley of the Sun is now the place you want to go. The greatest concentration of five-star resorts, exclusive shopping and restaurants, and miles of uber-elegant neighborhoods have replaced metal homes on wheels and Mel’s Diner itself. In some way, I got here like anybody else, relocating for a job in an unfamiliar environment. My preconceptions and bias against not only the desert but the metropolitan area were proven wrong. Dallas’ Highland Park, Benedict Canyon, the Malibu Colony, and Newport Coast were my reference points, the standard to which I held all comparison. But I was so wrong. And from this profoundly unexpected discovery, a story emerges. Welcome to Desert Camp: Situated in a high canyon beyond guarded gates in uber-exclusive North Scottsdale, some of the most wealthy and powerful families in North America live out their incomparable and often controversial lives in this gilded land of desert castles. #Silverleaf #ScottsdaleArizona #WindgatePass

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—This city has been booming for a decade, drawing new residents with its beautiful views, artsy vibe and mild weather. The pandemic brought new possibilities for remote work and supercharged population growth. Craft breweries, vintage stores and other small businesses flourished, adding to Asheville’s appeal. Now another unexpected phenomenon has thrown off its status as one of America’s most desirable mountain meccas. Floodwaters and heavy wind from Hurricane Helene destroyed the arts district, decimated historic Biltmore Village and trapped some people, including retirees, in their own homes. Many residents still lacked running water, cellphone service and electricity Wednesday, nearly a week after the storm caused catastrophic damage across the Southeast and killed at least 177 people. Almost half of small businesses never reopen after a disaster, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The scale of the wreckage suggests that it might be “one of the worst flooding disasters in United States history,” with striking similarities to the flooding from hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, said Jonathan Porter, chief meteorologist at AccuWeather. “Heartbreaking doesn’t even describe it,” said Jordan Moodie, the gallery manager at Foundation Studios, an 8,000-square-foot space in the River Arts District where about 100 artists sold their work a week ago. Now it is rubble, strewn with shredded canvases and mangled sculptures. “It’s beyond anything I could have imagined in my wildest nightmares,” he told The WSJ. The greater Asheville area has racked up all manner of superlatives in recent years: best U.S. city for beer lovers; highest ratio of people moving in compared with those moving out; top-five retirement destination. This year alone, wages had risen 7%, compared with 3.8% statewide. New residential permits rose 66% in July from a year earlier, according to a report prepared by the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and Western Carolina University. This weekend would typically kick off peak leaf season, with phalanxes of Harley-Davidson Road Kings and Fat Boys winding their way along the Blue Ridge Parkway, followed by minivans headed to one of a dozen national and state parks. Now parts of the parkway are impassable and most hotels and Airbnbs are shut down. Tourism represents 15% of local employment in the metro area. Visitors spent $3 billion last year in Buncombe County, where the city of Asheville is located, according to the county’s Tourism Development Authority. The Biltmore estate, an 8,000-acre property boasting the nation’s largest private residence and the most visited winery, is closed, with at least a week’s worth of reservations canceled at its signature hotel. It has no timeline yet for reopening. The Asheville region encompasses dozens of small towns, many of which were completely devastated.
