Massive well done to Rupert Bassadone 📍🎪 and Event Site Design. Such an accolade, so well deserved! Its down to Rupert, and WOMAD Ltd, that we moved into live events. The Occasional Kitchen, started organically, with supperclubs/pop ups growing into weddings and small markets, as opportunities were presented to us. Sometime in 2013, we started talking about the possibility of doing a pop-up restaurant at Womad, we’d been attending Womad, as punters for years, so were delighted at the opportunity. In the run up to 2014’s festival, Rupert asked if we’d consider doing the crew food too. The rest, as they say, is history! Thank you Rupert. This award obviously represents a team effort, and your team are exceptional, but indulge me, if you will … We joke about it all the time, but it’s still mind blowing to everyone who meets you, that you are able to hold an important conversation in person, whilst still listening to endless radio chat, and pick out anything vital that needs your attention. That ability to compartmentalise your brain, without dropping the ball, is ridiculous. You’re the benchmark we measure Ops Managers against, seriously. “ I mean they’re good, but are they Rupert good” - I’ve heard variations of that sentiment, more than I’m sure you’d allow yourself to believe. You work incredibly hard, and you’ve successfully managed to recruit, and inspire, a really great team of people around you. That doesn’t happen by accident. I’ll leave you with this gem. It’s a piece of advice, I don’t think you realise you gave me, that I share with other people, often. (I’m sure I don’t always credit you either! 🤣) ” When recruiting people, for your team, find people that are better than you. Heading into the weekend with a sense of anticipation, I'm a fan of arena events and more bijou performances alike. Both ends of the scale, have their charms (and frustrations) in terms of the whole experience including getting into and out of the events. This weekend includes two small-scale events - a dance show at a local theatre to watch my daughter, followed by a compact cinema viewing of Wilding (see my previous post regarding this hotly anticipated film). Back to the point - Queueing - a national (if not global) obsession, pet peeve or fascination for many. When crowd management goes well, queues throng with chatter and anticipation and it's fascinating to watch masses of people move as if in an orchestrated dance to their seats/tables/spaces. The arrival and the wait becomes part of the experience. The design and planning needed to make sure these events are safe with such large crowds is the topic of this insightful video. Expo Real 2024: A Call to Focus on What Really Matters – No Looking Back, Only Forward For far too long, the real estate industry has been stuck in the past. This is becoming alarmingly clear once again in the run-up to the next Expo Real. Countless discussions are being held about whether this or that framework condition needs to change for the real estate market to regain momentum. Or: which laws should be amended or introduced to pull the sector out of crisis mode? While there may indeed be some helpful ideas and important external measures among these discussions, I find they often distract us from what truly matters: now, more than ever, it is up to us as real estate players. We must be bold, resilient, optimistic—and take action. There are plenty of opportunities in every area. What are we waiting for? Further interest rate cuts, new housing laws, Building Type E, higher subsidies, an economic boom, the end of the war in Ukraine, the outcome of the US elections, clarity on government policy, the next federal government, or even some form of agreement at the EU level? The list could go on endlessly—times are uncertain, after all. But none of these factors are within our control. What will we do if these improvements and decisions are delayed even further? As project developers, we must act here and now. We need to focus on ourselves! This is a question of mindset! For over a decade, we have enjoyed favourable conditions. It seems to me that a large part of the real estate business community has forgotten how to fight against major obstacles and take steps into the unknown. If this does not fundamentally change, no Expo Real—or any other trade fair for that matter—will make a difference. What is your sentiment?
