It’s ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ Today, I’d like you to imagine that you have terrible abdominal, pelvic, back, hip, and thigh pain. You’ve had it for years. It varies in intensity, but it’s nearly always present in some form. At times, it’s distracting; other times, it’s downright debilitating. You’ve had countless medical tests: bloodwork, imaging, physical exams with multiple providers. No one can find anything “wrong”. 😵💫 You're starting to wonder, "Maybe it’s all in my head?" 😵💫 But finally, you find a provider who really knows their stuff. You trust them when they tell you they can help you get a diagnosis. Then they tell you how they plan to diagnose you: you need surgery. They explain that abdominal surgery is the only way to reach a definitive diagnosis. No imaging options or other tests can detect what they think you may have. For the estimated 1 in 10 people with #endometriosis, this is reality. Endo is incredibly difficult to diagnose — on average, it takes 7 years for people with endo to receive confirmation that their pain and symptoms are not, in fact, “in their head”. The reasons for this complexity and delay are myriad, but this week, we’re focusing on a particular element of the process: the lack of definitive diagnostic #imaging options. To receive confirmation of their condition, most must endure exploratory laparoscopy — a surgical procedure in which their provider views the contents of their abdominal and pelvic cavities using cameras inserted through abdominal incisions. Imagine agreeing to an invasive surgical procedure without any guarantee that you’ll feel better after it’s over. Your surgeon might find the cause of your pain…but then again, she might not. 🤯 There has to be a better way, right? 🤯 Healthcare providers can use MRI or ultrasound imaging to detect certain types of endometriosis. Unfortunately, these techniques can’t rule out all forms of this complex disease. They also still miss many of the lesions, making it more difficult to find and treat all regions of the disease. Enter this week’s featured #femtech company, EndoCure Ltd.. Co-founded by biomedical engineer Hadas Ziso, EndoCure Ltd. is working to revolutionize how we diagnose people with endometriosis. Hadas and her cofounders are developing a novel combination of diagnostic #ultrasound, #medicalrobotics, and #artificialintelligence to improve a physician’s ability to identify endo without surgery. EndoCure’s solution is too fascinating for me to fit it all into one post, so I’m breaking with tradition and making this week’s #O2WW a two-parter. 📡 Tune back in here for this week’s #FemaleHealthFriday - I’ll be taking a deeper dive into the #diagnosis of endometriosis and how EndoCure Ltd. plans to make it better! 📡 #womenshealth #lgbtqhealth #womenshealthmatters #pelvichealth #pelvicpain #chronicpain #medicalinnovation #healthtech #clinicalconsulting #medicalwriting
