I have come to think that the most challenging aspect of the #decarbonization of the energy system is the #electrification of demand. Today, only around 20% of final energy demand is electrified; the massive electrification of transportation, heating and industrial processes is a must to decarbonize the energy system by 2050. Last week, I had the opportunity to engage in a thoughtful panel at the #GreenHydrogenSummit organized by Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) about the role of #greenhydrogen to achieve the electrification of hard-to-abate industrial processes, such as ammonia, via green hydrogen production. Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals you can think of … its main use today is to manufacture fertilisers which are critical to make agriculture productive enough to keep feeding more than 8 billion people in this planet… furthermore, green ammonia could vastly expand its applications as an energy and hydrogen carrier. Key issues that were discussed were deployment of infrastructure, strategies to make green ammonia economically competitive, the instrumental role of innovation, regulations and standards … and much more! It was a pleasure to share the stage with my fellow panelists Roeland Baan, Claire Nicolas, Andrès Isaza, Petter Østbø ... thanks Matthieu Crest for the a great preparation and moderation and Sau Noddings for putting everything together!
