Overwhelming...and some observations from the Texas AWWA, especially for water technology start-ups. 👉 Location, location, location - be there! It's massively well attended 👉 Network, network, network - with other start-ups - no one has a complete solution and if you offer leads and introductions, the good you do will be repaid. Thank you Rick Sherman, Johnny Kabella and Jonathan Grant - shining examples! 👉 Focus, focus, focus - consulting engineers are often gatekeepers and will default to 'copy-pasting' tried and tested solutions. Seek them out (they will never come to you!) and inform them (especially at their after-conference parties 😉 🥂 ). Just saw this on Infrastructure Investor. I think it is indicative of the misunderstanding of our energy future. The article argues that the huge demand new data centres are holding back the renewable future by soaking up generation, extending the life of fossil-fuel plants. It is true in a limited sense, but implies that there is a limit to how quickly we can deploy and there really isn't. You can always build more wind turbines and solar farms and each unit of renewable energy deployed tends to be cheaper than the last. Even deployment rates don’t have a meaningful limit as the ramp up rate can be incredible. For example, today there is just over 1TeraWatt peak (TWp) of solar power in the world. That is after about 15 years of serious deployment. That is projected to be 1 year's deployment by 2030. No need for it to stop there, either. It is the most crucial thing to understand of the energy revolution; there are no limits and it gets cheaper forever. The only challenge left is to balance the intermittent supply and demand, where data centres will have an important role. Of course, we should use energy efficiently, but it is the core belief that energy is going to be a limiting factor in our world that needs to be overturned.
