The CleanTech Breakthrough Awards recognize innovative “breakthroughs” in the international Clean Technology industry. Here's how our FishSafe turbine designs excel in the six key areas evaluated by the judges: 💡 Innovation: Natel's FishSafe designs present a brand new approach to turbine runner design, enabling both safe fish passage and high-speed operation for a wide variety of turbine types, configurations, and sizes. 📈 Performance: FishSafe turbine designs deliver performance comparable to conventional turbine shapes with over 90% peak efficiency. 🏗 Ease of Use and Manageability: Natel's runner and turbine designs function as in-place replacements for existing models, enabling direct replacement of aging equipment without modifications to civil works. ⚡ Functionality: Natel performs rigorous in-house tests to optimize hydraulic performance and to verify safe passage for multiple species and life stages of fish. FishSafe turbines are currently in operation at power plants in the US and Austria. 💵 Value: Recent research shows that installing a FishSafe turbine can be more cost-effective than installing a conventional turbine and implementing traditional fish exclusion technologies. 🐟 Impact: By significantly improving fish passage, FishSafe turbines improve river connectivity, supporting the biodiversity of river systems and of the surrounding environments. We're thrilled to finally announce the introduction of HYDROSELECT, an innovative tool by the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance and the multistakeholder Working Group on Early Stage Decision Making, made up of representatives of the four chambers of the Hydropower Sustainability Council. This tool represents a leap forward in early stage decision making, guiding hydropower potential towards sustainability from the outset. Why HYDROSELECT? The path to sustainability must start early. Addressing sustainability in the initial stages of project development not only boosts confidence in project concepts but also saves time, effort, and investment down the line. New Zealand projects earn latest certification against the Hydropower Sustainability Standard! Contact Energy Ltd's Clyde and Roxburgh hydropower projects, located in Central Otago, have been awarded a Silver Certification against the Hydropower Sustainability Standard 🏞 This certification aligns with Contact Energy's Contact26 strategy, which is focused on decarbonising New Zealand. It provides a benchmark for assessing these hydro schemes against international sustainability best practices. The #ClydeandRoxburgh projects scored over 30% on the advanced requirements of the HSS, demonstrating Contact Energy’s commitment to operational sustainability and governance within the hydropower sector.
