Seems obvious but an insightful perspective nonetheless in that the supply side (grid) and demand side (Data Centers or any other digital infrastructure) have very different time requirements for growth. The grid at the end of the day does not store energy and balancing the input with output is most effective where demand can be planned over many years and decades. Demand for Data Center capacity is much more urgent. This may just be the incentive for energy innovation ala Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and rethinking the role of 'backup' power!

Thank you to Matt Vincent from Data Center Frontier for recounting the great discussions from the recent Trends summit – including energy storage insights from our president, Frank DeLattre. Frank’s talk acknowledged how graceful shutdown is no longer an option with today’s complicated, interlinked applications. The main purpose of energy storage is to bridge the gap between the utility outage and backup generator start. Frank noted how data center power architectures of isolated redundancy and catcher systems and the latest generator controls enable generators to be online in 10 seconds. Frank also explained that new, more sustainable options such as Musashi’s Hybrid SuperCapacitors (HSCs) are available for energy storage, focusing on “bridging to the generator. "What many don’t realize is the level of interdependence between the 3,000+ public power utilities in the U.S. It is one of the great balancing acts of modern times. Utilities hundreds or even thousands of miles apart support one another as demand for power ebbs and flows. This is because, to function, the grid needs to be balanced. There can’t be too many or too few electrons flowing at any given time without a place for them to be used.
