Major trends driving growth are set to continue and we expect broad appeal of our industry to intensify, driving long-term M&A activity across energy, power, and infrastructure. Our 2024 Outlook report reflects on examples of several trends that initiated rising momentum over the past year and highlights the appealing categories where we anticipate an increase in investor activity to come.
This week, Nick Geddes, Business Leader - Whole Systems and Networks at Energy Systems Catapult, addressed the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, alongside Electricity Networks Commissioner Nick Winser CBE FREng, as part of their Flexible Grid For The Future inquiry.
Nick's key points included:
👉 Significant transmission build is crucial this decade and beyond, with a need to reduce build time.
👉 The Government's acceptance of recommendations from the Electricity Networks Commissioner, to halve transmission build time is a positive step, but rapid implementation is essential.
👉 The development and delivery of the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) is a crucial part of the package, enabling whole systems analysis and governance embedding.
👉 The SSEP and the Centralised Strategic Network Plan will need to hang together with Regional Energy Strategic Planning (RESP) and Local Area Energy Planning (LAEP) planning to drive efficient investment.
👉 Additional plans (e.g. digitalisation) and supporting reforms (e.g. wholesale markets, retail markets), are necessary to drive innovation, minimise required transmission build, and reduce costs for the UK.
