On today’s episode of Did you Know?✨ Wind turbines usually have three blades because it's a balance between efficiency and stability. Wind turbines with three blades strike a balance between capturing sufficient wind for power generation and minimizing drag for efficiency. This design ensures stability during operation, distributing forces evenly to reduce the risk of imbalance and structural stress. This stability is vital, particularly in variable wind conditions or gusts, ensuring safe and optimized energy production. #windturbines #energyefficiency #sustainableenergy

Shaft alignment is a critical aspect of wind turbine operation, with even small misalignments leading to significant operational issues. The challenges in ensuring precise alignment are numerous, from thermal expansion to dealing with wind-induced vibrations. This blog explores these real-world challenges faced by engineers and demonstrates how Acoem’s cutting-edge laser alignment solutions provide the accuracy and reliability needed to overcome them, ensuring efficient turbine performance.
Wind turbines are key to our renewable energy future, but keeping them running smoothly goes beyond just capturing the wind. One of the most critical yet often overlooked aspects of wind turbine maintenance is precise shaft alignment. Misalignment between gearbox and generator shafts can cause: ⚠️ Increased vibrations ⚠️ Premature wear and tear ⚠️ Costly downtime and repairs At Acoem, we understand the importance of getting this right. Our latest blog dives deep into the challenges of shaft alignment in wind turbines and the practical solutions available to ensure optimal performance. "Wind power generated more electricity than coal in the U.S. in March and April" this year, reports NBC News. The clean power industry in the U.S. is projected to invest $65 billion in offshore wind projects by 2030, according to a report from American Clean Power Association (ACP). In fact, the U.S. has more than 74,500 wind turbines and about 3,000 new turbines have been built every year since 2005. With each 3MW direct drive turbine requiring up to 2 tonnes of #rareearths permanent magnets, we're excited to be pioneering an ethical and reliable #supplychain of these #criticalmaterials which the #cleanenergytransition demands. #cleantech #sustainability #cleanpower

An insightful article regarding size of wind turbine blades and its long-term impact on energy, maintenance and decommissioning costs In brief - bigger does not always mean better
Harvard Business Review regarding optimal blade size - The Long-Term Costs of Wind Turbines. The higher maintenance and end-of-life(MEOL) cost, the shorter optimum blades. In summary the article suggest to keep blades around the 80 meters mark by considering size, location and lifetime value. Question: will the 50% MEOL assumption be enough?
