EVERYONE WORKING IN ENERGY TODAY SHOULD HAVE A SIDE HUSTLE AS A RECRUITER... ...it doesn't matter if you're about to cross a 40-year career horizon or if you've only been working for 40 days, the industry's future will be built in how effectively -- individually and collectively -- it recruits. This week, some very cool insights will be released by Careers in Energy, a division of Energy Safety Canada, which, along with a national steering committee, have been working hard on next-generation labor market models that will help the overall energy "system of systems" contemplate its human capital future. Careers in Energy has its origin story as the Petroleum Human Resources Council, so it's no stranger to accurately forecasting labor market needs. Our Tuesday kickoff begins a national roadshow, via which results of the last year's research effort will be highlighted. As might be expected, #energytransition drivers will fundamentally shape future workforce dynamics but the reality is that we already have much of what we need in terms of new qualifications. Some key principles will underpin each stop on the campaign trail, including: - Canada’s established oil and gas industry remains critical to the country’s energy system and economic well-being; at the same time, it’s an asset to support lower-carbon energy sources. - Canada’s energy sector is becoming increasingly integrated, and so is its workforce. - Foundational technology, equipment, skills and expertise are expanding and being used to develop new energy sources and deploy emissions-reduction technologies. - Many of the qualifications required by emerging energy sectors already exist within the established ones. - Increased number of quality energy jobs will be available in a more diversified industry. - Transferability between established and emerging sectors: horizontal career pathways; short-term upskilling or reskilling will be big drivers. - Meaningful contributions to society: ie, decarbonizing while ensuring affordable, accessible energy supply will be a key value proposition. The kickoff includes a panel discussion by Kevin Krausert of Avatar Innovations Inc., Gurpreet Lail of Enserva and Patricia Bailey of Pathways Alliance, who will reflect on what their respective organizations are doing in terms of future recruitment and employee engagement and retention. As a steering committee member, I will bring together key messages from the kickoff and reflect on what they mean for our sector's future. That includes reminding everyone that every energy-related conversation with someone already not industry is a recruiting opportunity. Much of our work results from cool future modelling done by the great team at The Transition Accelerator/ L’Accélérateur de transition.
