Can a trucking company hire a CDL driver and assume the driver is properly trained (Part 2)? No! Almost every State CDL manual addresses this in the Introduction of Section 1. "To get a CDL, you must pass knowledge and skills tests. This manual will help you pass the tests. This manual is not a substitute for a truck driver class or program. Formal training is the most reliable way to learn the many special skills required for safely driving a large commercial vehicle and becoming a professional driver in the trucking industry." Having a CDL doesn't mean a driver is properly trained. Thanks to Corey Cox, CDS for pointing this out. #truckinglawyers

🚚 As a commercial truck driver, you'll come across various codes on your Commercial Driver's License (CDL). These include not only endorsements, but restrictions to your license. These codes, known as CDL A restriction codes, determine what you can and can’t do with your license. There are 8 common types of Class A CDL restrictions: - L restriction – No air brake equipped CMV 💨 - Z restriction – No full air brake equipped CMV - E restriction – No manual transmission equipped CMV - O restriction – No tractor-trailer CMV - M restriction – No Class A passenger vehicle - N restriction – No class A and B passenger vehicle - V restriction – CMV medical variance required - K restriction – CDL intrastate only 🛣️ Why do CDL restrictions matter? Understanding and adhering to CDL restrictions is important for several reasons: Employment opportunities: Restrictions can limit the types of jobs you can take. If you want more job opportunities, it can be smart to remove any restrictions. Getting rid of restrictions shows you have more skills, making you a better choice for more employers Safety: Restrictions help make sure drivers are only operating vehicles they are proficient with. This helps keep the roads safer. Compliance: Violating CDL restrictions can result in penalties such as fines and license suspension Learn more: https://lnkd.in/evmZCD2t #theagteam #trucker #wisdomwednesday

Best Practices for Commercial Driver Road Tests 📋👨✈️ Road tests are a crucial part of the driver qualification process for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. Adopting best practices can help carriers not only meet but exceed regulatory minimums, leading to improved safety, reduced risks, and increased driver skills and confidence. Here are ten best practices for commercial driver road tests: 1. Use a Single Road Course: - Utilize one road course that is applicable to the driver's operating environment. 2. Prohibit Exceptions in 391.33: - Prohibit the use of exceptions in 391.33, ensuring thorough road tests for all drivers. 3. Consider Third-Party Examiners: - Consider hiring professional third-party examiners with proven evaluation skills for impartial assessments. 4. Require CDL for Evaluators: - Mandate that evaluators of CDL-vehicle drivers hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate the vehicle if necessary. 5. Standardize Scoring Sheet: - Adopt a standardized scoring sheet and require completion during the test, providing consistency and documentation. 6. Document Evaluator Competence: - Document the basis for deeming an evaluator competent, including appointment letters or certification. 7. Guard Against Bias: - Regularly evaluate testers for the consistent application of standards and guard against bias in assessments. 8. Clear Instructions During Test: - Ensure testers explain what the driver can expect before starting the test and limit comments to avoid distractions. 9. Remedial Training for Deficiencies: - Conduct remedial training to address road-test deficiencies if a driver passes the test. 10. Regular Road Tests After Transitions: - Perform road tests regularly after significant transitions, such as returning from an extended absence, being assigned to a new vehicle or operation type, operating in specific conditions (e.g., winter or mountainous terrain), or assuming duties as a driver-trainer. #RoadTests #DriverSafety #BestPractices #drivertruck #carrier #driverstest
