I can be a sarcastic so-and-so at times. Candidate approaches me, looking for a role.... Them: "I am looking for a job" Me: "So, what sort of a job are you looking for?" Them: "Any sort of job" Me: "OK, I am looking for a stuntmen and an astronaut" Them: "huh?" Hear me out. I'm not a bad person. This admittedly stupid reply often get's a sympathic grin but it really does help them realise that they need to at least define the shape of the role they are looking for. Surprisingly rare. Three reasons: a) it demonstrates self-awareness, the lack of which makes for job seeking hell. b) genuine interest in a type of role / career is the trump card with the decision makers. c) it makes everyone's job easier. Weirdly enough, being more precise about the shape your ideal target role helps more in tougher times. So, less of the "I am an engineer looking to make use of my skills" and more of the "I am a civil engineer looking for a design-focused role ideally in a smaller structural consultancy" or.. I am an Architectural Technician with good Revit skills looking to build my experience with commercial projects. To the point, powerful and effective. Say no to beige.

Allow me to share a valuable lesson I've learned from my experience. There was an engineer who lacked prior experience working with Revit. During the markup process, he noticed that some AC ductwork was visible in the ventilation layout. Consequently, he instructed to DELETE the AC ductwork in the markup instead of indicating "HIDE AC ductwork from ventilation layout," the technician proceeded to delete the AC ductwork from the model. This misunderstanding led to significant rework and resource wastage. It underscores the importance of engineers understanding how Revit operates to avoid such issues in the future.

A while back I posted a Revit video Tutorial showing how to create a tag that would tag a filled region's area. A pretty cool trick I thought.. then yesterday somebody posted a comment on the video asking what should have been the obvious question, "what about scheduling the filled region areas, can that be done, is there a trick for that?".. No is the answer... but his question rang in my head like a taunt.. so, I asked myself that old question.. What do you do when something can't be done in Revit? You make it do it!! So, here it is... More Revit tips and tricks.. how to schedule filled region areas..

Does Draftsman get the recognition they deserve in the Engineering industry? Whenever you read any article or attend any award ceremony, it’s all about the Engineers and Architects. Yet without the draftsman who collates all the information from all parties (Engineers, Architects, Clients, Contractors, and Sub-contractors) to develop and produce 3D/2D models and drawings, throughout the whole process of design, build, operation and maintain, often under extreme pressures to meet strict deadlines. Without the skills and knowledge of draftsmen (i.e. Designs, Shop drawings, detailing) the industry couldn’t function. After all most engineering companies have at least one draftsman I think the Engineering industry as a whole needs to improve and recognize the input and importance of all technicians. What are your thoughts??
