David Erdelac, Construction Safety Manager, discovered his passion for safety at a young age. “Growing up, I was fascinated with the construction field and wanted to help keep people safe. The two coincide with each other, so that’s the main reason I became interested in construction safety,” says David. As a student at Slippery Rock University, David attended the Safety Management Career and Internship Expo and was drawn to the exhibit for Jay Dee Contractors, Inc. David was offered a paid internship shortly after. During his internship, David worked hard, showed initiative, and was eventually offered a full-time position at Jay Dee as a Safety Representative. Having excelled in that role, David was promoted and is currently a Construction Safety Manager. Some of his job responsibilities include performing site inspections and audits; training personnel on safe work methods; developing JHAs; managing PPE inventories and vendors; managing safety staff; and performing Industrial Hygiene testing. Jay Dee Contractors, Inc. prides itself on providing internship opportunities for undergraduate students seeking a future in the construction industry. In the past 5 years, Jay Dee has provided approximately 30 internship opportunities to students. Internships not only expose students to real-life experiences and scenarios, but also serve as a strong cornerstone for future career opportunities and provide insight on what it’s like to work in a particular field. David says, “if you have the opportunity for an internship, I advise you to take the initiative to do one. Internships are a great way to build your confidence and professionalism. By being provided with hands-on experience, I was able to explore safety as a career, learn, and expand my knowledge within the industry that I had my heart and mind set on.” David, thanks for all you do to keep our team safe!

Materials Engineering Graduate | Oil & Gas Safety Passport (OGSP) holder | Seeking for entry level position
🌟 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: 𝐌𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 🌟 Last month marked the completion of my enriching 7-month journey as an Engineer Trainee at 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚) 𝐒𝐝𝐧. 𝐁𝐡𝐝.. Despite the initial challenges in securing an internship placement as a foreigner in Malaysia, I was fortunate to be part of a remarkable team that provided invaluable learning experiences. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 📊 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬: One of the critical skills I developed during my internship was statistical analytics. I learned how to sanitize inspection data for tube exchangers using the Statistical Tube Exchanger Analytic and Reliability (STELLAR-X) methodology. This involved analyzing numerous documents to produce clean and accurate inspection data. 🤝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: Effective communication and accountability were essential skills I perfected during this journey. Working closely with fellow trainees, employees, and other staff members, we created an interactive work environment that fostered growth and collaboration. 🎙️ 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: My internship experience also empowered me to speak confidently in front of an audience. Whether it was presenting my SIT experience, a project done through the SIP period or sharing concepts with team members, I learned the art of public speaking. 🔧 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥: I had the privilege of gaining practical mechanical skills, particularly in inspecting gaskets. This involved evaluating filler materials' nominal pipe sizes and measuring outer and inner diameters to ensure precise dimensions. Throughout this journey, I also worked on a significant project titled "𝐆𝐚𝐩 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐑-𝐗)." This project added depth to my knowledge and allowed me to contribute to the company's objectives. I am profoundly thankful to Mr. Max Soh for believing in my potential and providing me with this remarkable growth experience in the host company. As I embark on the next chapter of my career in Materials Engineering, I eagerly look forward to applying these newly acquired skills and knowledge. I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my supervisors and co-supervisor, Dr. Davannendran Chandran (UTP supervisor), Mr. Ikram Ibrahim (host company supervisor), and Mr. Muhammad Umar Shah Mohammad (host company co-supervisor), whose unwavering guidance and invaluable support were instrumental throughout my enriching internship journey. #EngineeringInternship #SkillsDevelopment #CareerJourney #MaterialsEngineering #Gratitude

Update: 11 March 2023 Internship Sharing Gas and Oil. It is frightening to move to a new town. It is bone-chilling to start a new job. It is terrifying to meet new people. Can you imagine doing all three at once? As scary as it might sound, these challenges are inevitable, especially for students that will undergo internship. Education provides skills and on the other hand, internship is essential to provide invaluable insights, general workplace exposure, practical and professional skills in the age of Industry 4.0, and best work practices in the world of engineering. This sharing session manage to provide students with the necessary tools for overcoming obstacles which they will face in their industrial training. A big thanks to our speaker, Qimmy Daniella Binti Sabri, who had gave us a lot of useful insights regarding internship, the committees that made this programme possible and the participants that have engaged in this sharing session. I am grateful that I can take part in this programme as a publicity comittee and a participant. Hopefully, this programme is able to give a little bit exposure to those who are about to perform their industrial training.

Non Petroleum Engineering related post: Do not hire intern if… Quite recently, I have been seeing trends of hiring interns massively from various companies. This has been a disease for some of them that: - asking interns to do actual works just like other employees - absence of training program throughout their internship period - ghosting and unable to allocate time regularly for feedback sessions - not committed to absorb them for future employment By doing all these negative things , but not limited to the above, you are abusing future leaders of the next generations. Do not blame others for your own misconduct to optimise the cost whilst utilising the legal requirements in the country (Not sure if this is inclusive of Tax Exemption).

Are you a recent graduate struggling to find a job in your field? Don't be discouraged! Take a cue from my LinkedIn story. My passion for skilled trades began after earning an associate's degree, but struggling to find work due to lack of practical experience. Meanwhile, my spouse, who had no formal education, was quickly climbing the ranks in the I/E world after beginning as an Electrical Helper. This experience taught me the value of gaining practical experience, even if it meant taking longer to obtain that degree (or realizing you might not really need it after all.) Don't be afraid to take on internships or entry-level positions to gain the experience that will set you apart in interviews. This can also open your eyes to what other roles are available that you may not have known about otherwise. Remember, education is important, but practical experience can make all the difference in landing your dream job. #PracticalExperience #SkilledTrades #SkilledCrafts #TradeSchool #CommunityCollege #HigherEducation #Helpers #ExperienceOverEducation #Construction #Maintenance #ContractorRoles
