In Kurdějov, Brěclov District, South Moravian Region, Czech Republic, a winery nestled within the hills of the region, placed sustainability at the heart of its design. With a perforated, curved green roof, the structure aspired to blend within its surroundings. Over 150 native trees and shrubs have been planted on site and within the site too, enhancing the regions biodiversity. The use of locally sourced, native oak and acacia wood throughout the interior spaces, gives the interiors a strong connection to the outdoors, while also lowering the project embodied carbon footprint. Careful attention was paid to the energy usage throughout the property. Strategically placed oak wood overhangs over the windows reduces the thermal absorption within the facility in the summer months. The curvature of the roof allows for rainwater harvesting which is reused for the extensive gardens, and an air to water heat pump system heats the interiors of the spaces throughout the winter months. Projects such as these, show the capabilities of incorporating multiple aspects of sustainable building techniques that can all be blended together, into one seamless comprehensive space.
