Ontario-based Evercloak has been awarded $3 million in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to support a pilot project advancing the commercialization of its building dehumidification technology. Initially, Evercloak will receive $350,000 to accelerate the production of its graphene oxide composite membrane and build an advanced dehumidification system prototype. The system will be enabled by Evercloak's proprietary membrane, which allows water vapor to pass through while blocking the passage of air. "Conventional air conditioning uses so much energy because it cools and dehumidifies at the same time, chilling the air until the moisture condenses out," explains Evercloak CEO Evelyn Allen. "By separating those two steps and using membrane-based technology to handle the dehumidification, we can achieve the same building cooling results using far less energy." NYSERDA might extend the award, providing an additional $1.15 million to fund the development of a full-scale HVAC system and its commercial demonstration in a New York City building once the scale-up phase is complete. Evercloak expects the technology will help reduce emissions within the State's building sector by 40% and minimize the sector's peak energy consumption by 25%, thus eliminating 2-5 megatons of CO2 equivalents a year. It will also make cooling more affordable, enhancing the quality of life for residents during the summer season. The award is part of NYSERDA's NextGen Buildings Innovation Challenges, which supports companies developing, commercializing, and demonstrating new technologies to strengthen building performance and energy efficiency, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The program supports innovative technologies including ground source heat pumps, cutting-edge geothermal technologies, and novel building envelope solutions in addition to intelligent building control solutions. 🤔 Can heritage buildings achieve a 70% total energy reduction? An analysis of 6️⃣9️⃣ refurbished buildings proves that it is possible. 🔎 After collecting and documenting the buildings within two projects, Daniel Herrera, Franziska Haas, Gustaf Leijonhufvud and Alexandra Troi from the FuturHist team analysed the best practices presented in the HiBERatlas (Historical Building Energy Retrofit Atlas) available 👉https://lnkd.in/dF5dTsbd They draw some interesting conclusions in the article published in the Journal “Heritage” at MDPI 👉 https://lnkd.in/da-ZQfxx The research not only demonstrates the significant energy reduction resulting from the various measures being implemented but also highlights the practical implications of these findings. For instance, the important role of Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery compared to buildings without MVHR or the positive effect of solar energy is evident in the case of PV. Over the past four years, Oberlin has been installing geothermal infrastructure. Construction in partnership with Ever-Green Energy is now completed, and our new eco-friendly geothermal heating and cooling system is fully operational, replacing the outdated fossil fuel-based system just in time for winter. “Oberlin has been proactive about meeting the challenge of carbon neutrality,” says President Carmen Twillie Ambar. “We’re not avoiding our responsibility to future generations. Green Solar Energy Initiative Proposed for Sandringham Estate An ambitious plan to bring sustainable energy to Sandringham Estate is currently being developed. The proposal involves the installation of around 2,000 solar panels within the estate grounds, aiming to power the entire 20,000-acre royal residence using zero-carbon energy. The solar panels will not only meet existing but also the future energy demands of Sandringham House and the visitors' centre. It is also intended to put surplus energy back into the grid, promoting cleaner, greener practices. Sandringham Estate, steeped in history and tradition as the private home of British monarchs since 1862, is dedicated to implementing green practices while preserving its heritage for generations to come. The location for the solar panels, is expected to be within secluded horse-grazing paddocks near Sandringham House, ensuring minimal disruption to productive agricultural land and local ecology. The consultation process is underway, with the final decision expected in early June. If approved, the solar farm at Sandringham Estate will operate for approximately 40 years, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable future. We are very honored that our project was selected by the European Commission’s agency CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency as part of the 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 (https://lnkd.in/gu4MuH4e).  This is the first – and so far, the only – heat pumps manufacturing project supported by the Innovation Fund. Our project called “CircularSteam” consists in a new modular plant in Herstal (Belgium) to allow for the delivery of up to 50 MW of industrial high-temperature heat pumps from 2027.  It will allow us to scale-up the technology developed by our JV partner Combitherm GmbH, including for the generation of low pressure steam using heat pumps. This manufacturing unit will allow to support the growing European demand for decarbonizing industrial heat <200°C by recovering waste heat from industrial processes and cooling systems.  This allows to reduce by up to -70% the primary energy required by industrial sites in Food & Beverage, Pharma, and other Light Industries.  This “efficient electrification” contributes not only to the climate goals of the EU, but also to its energy security (by replacing imported gas with local renewable electricity) and to its industrial competitiveness (by decreasing and stabilizing the energy costs for the EU industries). This project is part of Armstrong’s program to scale-up the manufacturing of industrial high-temperature heat pumps globally.  It completes our factory expansions in India and in the USA (supported by a DoE grant) – additionally to heat pumps manufacturing in our existing facilities in China and Mexico.  Overall, our global manufacturing capacity of industrial high-temperature heat pumps will exceed 200 MW in 2027.  This technology is in the heart of Armstrong’s Circular Thermal℠ design concept (https://lnkd.in/e_Q8Ybp3) – which is bundling Pinch analysis, (partial or complete) de-steaming, direct heat recovery and low-grade heat recovery using heat pumps. Circular Thermal℠ is increasingly adopted by companies having SBTI goals implying the decarbonization of their thermal systems by 2030. We are very thankful to all our customers, the authorities of the Wallonia region and other partners for their support letters for our project – these were critical to show at which point our vision is shared by private companies, public authorities, academia and industry associations. A special “thank you” also goes to Schuman Associates for their hard work and efficiency in helping us preparing our file.
