I like that people are talking about this, but ultimately this concept is not innovative and has been around for a long time. Let's say you want to run a Tier IV HPC with a variable renewable energy source... What is the best way to do that? First you decentralize geographically where wind or solar patterns typically hit their peak at different times of the day. Second, you run multiple instances of a distributed network across that decentralized network creating multiple nodes of redundancy. Now you have addressed one of the major issues of the energy transition, while building out compute pods that are less than a Tier I, but operate as a Tier IV. At the end of the day what really makes this possible? #Elon and #Starlink. SpaceX has brought high-speed connectivity to the world and stretched our computing capabilities to stranded and underutilized energy across the world.

If you are an independent power producer or on an economic development team for a utility or city looking to add new, flexible energy loads, I'd love to connect. The grid in the United States needs flexible, curtail-able loads more than anything else. With the proliferation of renewables (great), this also has created challenges and new strains on our grid. Transmission build-out and storage have long lead times and are capital-intensive. Siting loads with renewable assets creates significant value with no capital risk. Data center loads co-located with renewable facilities relieve significant economic and reliability constraints and generate 30-40% more energy, PTC and REC value. Belisari models underutilized renewable assets, and regulatory market structures to assess the opportunity set.  Pairing flexible HPC data centers alongside congestion and/or IPP generation is one solution that Belisari will tackle! A new era for the Nordic Balancing Model💨 🗓️ On December 3rd, the new mFRR Energy Activation Market (EAM) will replace the current balancing market, marking a significant shift for the Nordic power system. This change moves us from manual to automated balancing, driven by forecasts. The transition is carefully planned, but if challenges arise, it may be delayed to December 10th or early 2025. 💫 This upgrade is part of the broader Nordic Balancing Model, paving the way for more precise power flows, 15-minute imbalance settlement, and improved market efficiency.   💡 Did you know that the team at Optimeering have worked with Statnett SF on the IMPALA project for real-time forecasting of grid imbalance. Accurate forecasts of imbalance are essential for automatic activation of mFRR, and the IMPALA project was ground-breaking in it's use of AI to produce such forecasts. 🌟 KTP project video update 🌟 I’m delighted to share an update on our KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) project with the brilliant team at the University of Glasgow. Over the past two years, we've been working on delivering NetZero for our estate. Our KTP associate, Dr Sonam Norbu, with guidance from Prof David Flynn and Dr Benoit Couraud, has led the creation of a dynamic sensor landscape across multiple buildings on our estate. This project generates real-time data that is starting to inform our team's decisions and enable us to test interventions in real-time. Together this approach is helping us reduce our carbon footprint and prepare for a local heat network. This project has been transformational in building our case for a heritage-led transition to NetZero, it has also helped foster a culture of innovation, evidence-based action and curiosity within The Crichton Trust team.
