This week, at the Transport Research Arena (TRA), Niina Kuittinen from our partner VTT, showcased the results of the #GREENRAY study titled "Real-world Emissions Measured On-board from two LNG-fueled Vessels". 🚢 The TRA, is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility with more than 4000 attendees this year. The paper presented showed that low #methaneslip was measured from newbuild engines. Additionally, it was observed the load dependency of methane slip, emphasizing that reducing low load operation could significantly decrease methane slip alongside engine and aftertreatment development efforts. These insights not only contribute to the ongoing conversation on reducing emissions but also help refine the modelling of methane slip on a fleet level. Our involvement in the "Zero Emissions Transport" session was not only an opportunity to present our findings but also to engage with the broader community on the latest mobility trends, industry achievements, and best practices in policy and deployment. 🤝 The insights gained from the study are invaluable as we strive towards #NetZero emissions, highlighting how #LNG and innovative practices can significantly reduce environmental impacts. Let’s continue to drive forward the conversation on sustainability and innovation in the maritime sector. 🌍 #TRA2024 #Sustainability #ClimateAction

Join us at SH2E Day! Tomorrow at 14:00, ecoinvent Project Manager Antonio Valente will give a presentation titled "Advancing Sustainability in the Energy Sector: The Critical Role of LCA, Social and Economic Considerations and Harmonization Initiatives to Support Decision-Making" at this SH2EProject event. Hydrogen is poised to play a critical role in our journey towards global sustainability. However, to make fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) systems effective, informed decision-making is crucial. Beyond technological innovations, we need robust methodological solutions to evaluate FCH systems' sustainability from a life-cycle perspective. The SH2E project aims to provide a harmonized framework for Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) and benchmarking of FCH systems, addressing environmental, economic, and social dimensions. This initiative is co-funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and #Horizon2020. We celebrate this pioneering milestone in establishing the first LCSA guidelines for hydrogen technologies, setting the stage for future standardization at both European and global levels. 📣 Secretary General Peter Vermaat joined the panel discussion on the challenges of the future of the energy system during yesterday's Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) Annual conference. ⚠ Considering the newly adopted EU energy market design rules, Europe will face critical challenges in electricity and infrastructure, especially in the upcoming legislative changes. Peter shared insights on the emerging challenges and opportunities of the Future energy system. ➡ Key takeaways from the discussion: 📌From DSOs point of view, #demandresponse and #energystorage are vital flexibility solutions, closely linked to the decentralised grid. The key challenge is tackling congestion while enhancing local flexibility. 📌Security of supply and #flexibility go hand in hand. A well-designed regulatory framework, like EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER)’s ongoing NC Demand Response consultation, is essential to removing barriers for a future-proof energy market. 📌Local flexibility innovations in industrial zones, where energy is shared based on city needs, supported by flexible capacity contracts will pave the way for more responsive grids. 📌Capacity is the new scarcity—pricing needs to shift away from volume, and move towards adequately valuing capacity. 📌#Consumers will increasingly be at the heart of the #energytransition, with more opportunities to engage in flexibility solutions. 📌 Reinforcing #grids and optimising both existing and new capacity is crucial for achieving carbon reduction targets. 📌#Anticipatoryinvestments will allow DSOs to connect more resources and stay efficient. 📌Interaction between #DSOs and #TSOs should be redefined: congestion happens mostly at low/medium level so DSO grid will become more important in preventing them, unlocking flexibility and keeping the system stable. 📌Small DSOs are pioneering #flexibilitysolutions at the local level, as they are implementing pragmatic approaches within their communities. 🤝 The event was a great opportunity to engage with experts and peers in the energy sector and discuss topics of common interest. Thank you, Mara Berzina, for having us! Leonardo Meeus | Kristian Ruby | Walburga Hemetsberger | Michael Villa #CAC2024 #CEERAnnualConference2024 #energymarket #Energyregulation #Energysector

🌍 Breaking Down Barriers to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) at European Sustainability Week 2024 - a must see panel debate with an excellent view of state-of-play for CCS in Europe. During the European Sustainability Week 2024, key stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in achieving the EU's ambitious climate targets. The panel highlighted several critical points: Importance of CCS: CCS is essential to meeting our climate goals. With the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, it is a crucial technology for a sustainable future. Challenges and Solutions: Despite its importance, CCS faces several challenges, including high costs, regulatory hurdles, and public acceptance. The panel emphasized the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework, public-private partnerships, and increased funding to overcome these barriers. Collaboration Across Sectors: Collaboration is key. By bringing together various stakeholders, including NGOs, business associations, and corporate organizations, we can create a robust ecosystem to support CCS deployment. Technological and Regulatory Advances: The development of new technologies and the establishment of a clear regulatory framework are happening simultaneously. The EU's commitment to creating a single market for CO2 and the upcoming infrastructure package are significant steps forward. Future Outlook: Looking ahead, the panelists expressed optimism about the future of CCS. They believe that with continued effort, collaboration, and innovation, CCS can become as prevalent and successful as renewable energy technologies have become over the past two decades. The European Commission's commitment to accelerating CCS and addressing the associated challenges is a promising sign. Let's continue to work together to make CCS a cornerstone of our strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
