DVS X-Ray 3.0 is now automating DVS Scores for amateur baseball. Version 3.0 can utilize two cameras recording 240 frames per second, strategically positioned to capture side and rear views focused on the same pitch. This setup is designed to generate an automated DVS Scores for our clients. Automated DVS Scores for our clients are a feature of version 3.0 and require sufficient cameras, shutter speeds, framing, lighting, and contrast to enhance the accuracy of each DVS Score. Our collaboration with John Viguerie, an expert in computer vision and photogrammetry, has paved a pathway for larger youth organizations to offer a biomechanical solution. For less than $3500, our clients can purchase an approved Biomech kit compatible with DVS X-Ray 3.0. Prior to DVS X-Ray 3.0 being sold to any client, we test their current cameras and setup to determine the potential combination of automated and manual scores. Our goal is to empower communities with an affordable biomechanics solution, offering actionable insights for pitchers. This solution grants them distribution of their own DVS Scores throughout the entire process. While technology evolves, manual scoring remains central to generating reliable DVS Scores for most of our X-Ray clients, particularly the early stages of amateur baseball. Announcing the DVS Baseball X-Ray Mocap Kit! For over a decade, I've envisioned allowing others to produce DVS Scores for their pitchers at every level of baseball. That vision became a reality this past week with the addition of the DVS X-Ray Mocap Kit. This two-camera markerless motion capture kit will provide the essential hardware for DVS X-Ray, the software to deliver automated DVS Score Biomechanical Analysis for pitchers, especially amateur pitchers. Thanks to the entire DVS Team and our current X-Ray users for their ongoing commitment to our mission and for making this a reality. Special thanks to John Viguerie for his expert guidance in assisting DVS with this motion capture solution. Last summer, we proved DVS X-Ray can effectively produce automated DVS Scores using KinaTrax Data, the gold standard for in-game biomechanics data at the professional and collegiate levels. Last fall, we proved that DVS X-Ray could automate DVS Scores using off-the-shelf 240fps cameras from both a side and back view. Over the last three months, we have strived to narrow down cameras that can efficiently and reliably capture raw video of a pitcher's mechanics, which DVS X-Ray can utilize to automate the Delivery Value System (our proprietary biomechanics analysis). The goal is to provide cost-effective biomechanics solutions powered by markerless motion software, injury risk modeling, and a decade of practical application to help pitchers prevent arm injuries, increase innings, and boost in-game success/performance at all levels of baseball. How can we have studies about the effects of pitching on the arm and the shoulder, but never take into consideration the actual mechanics of the pitch? One poorly thrown baseball can do more harm than 10 perfectly thrown ones. It's time to come up with a pitching avatar. Every person is different, but the one thing that could align all of the results is the actual pitching mechanics, which no one can come to a consensus. Golf has the IRON BYRON, a mechanical swing device patterned after the swing of the late great Byron Nelson. Baseball needs a pitching avatar. Until there is consensus on what sound and safe mechanics actually are, every other study done is hogwash. The real cause of injury is the mechanics. The better the pitcher's mechanics, the less injury. We see study after study about the effects of throwing the ball, but no one ever tackles the most important thing: how the movement is done. In my opinion, there is a right way to throw, and everything else is wrong. With pitchers' front legs ground reaction forces taking a variety of characteristics and shapes, what can be deemed as ideal? When interpreting ground reactions forces, 8ctane Baseball and I analyze: the timing of the max vertical and horizontal forces, the impulse of the forces overall, and the magnitude of the ground reaction force that is occurring midway between footplant and ball release. To break these down further… When searching for ideal mechanics, syncing up horizontal and vertical forces is crucial. Peaks occurring simultaneously ensure maximum force creation, maintaining a stable trunk position and preventing front leg collapse through ball release. The impulse of the force curve should resemble a clean up and back motion on the GRF graph. As I stated in my previous post, Visualize it like taking a half-court jump shot. A clean up and back motion in the GRF graph's impulse curve mirrors the efficient power transfer needed to send the ball effortlessly to the basket. It's all about creating that single, powerful motion with the legs. Now the hardest thing for pitchers to sync up: the timing of these max forces. We deem any force produced after the max layback will not have enough time to travel up the body and act on the ball. Referring back to the half court shot analogy, you begin to push into the ground with your legs, but you shoot the ball before you’ve ever left the ground, resulting in leftover force occurring with no effect on the ball. This is the most common inefficiency we see in pitchers at all levels of play. The last variable is how much force are pitchers producing in the lead leg. A majority of pitchers produce a magnitude ranging from 2.4 to 2.7 times their bodyweight, however; pitchers with elite front legs and mechanics can produce around 3.1 times their body weight — a testament to the importance of both strength, stability, and mechanics. This is just the tip of the iceberg - in both ideal ground reaction forces and pitching mechanics as a whole. Thanks to the United Shore Professional Baseball League for their invaluable assistance in helping us finalize the DVS X-Ray MoCap Kit. During the first two weeks of the USPBL season, we set up the DVS X-Ray MoCap Kit on the game mound to capture the deliveries of 40 pitchers, providing them with their respective DVS Scores. The videos captured have been instrumental in helping us to fine-tune our synch and scoring logic that accounts for the vast combinations of movements in the pitching delivery. In preparation for the release of the DVS X-Ray MoCap Kit, we've ensured it captures pitchers of all levels, from Little League to professionals, with fastballs ranging from 50 mph to 95 mph. This process has led to significant breakthroughs at DVS in our mission to bring AFFORDABLE, markerless motion capture technology to those who previously couldn't afford or access advanced biomechanics tools.
