In Bangalore, retaining top engineering talent is no easy task. Every third street has a tech startup, and there’s plenty of money chasing bar-raising talent. While things aren’t quite the same as they were in 2021, for these engineers, it’s not about the money—it’s about the nature of the work. As an engineer myself, I can say that those truly passionate about their craft have no shortage of opportunities. If you're a B2B SaaS founder and want to retain talent, one thing I've learned is to offer them tough problems to solve and give them the autonomy to work. While perks like hybrid work, ESOPs, and great compensation are appealing, what’s more important is ensuring engineers are solving challenging problems and feeling ownership. Many founders think hiring product managers is enough, but that’s a common mistake. Engineers today don’t just want to solve problems; they want to identify them too.
