BLOG: In a #GeneralElection, we often hear promises to employ more nurses. REAL Centre Senior Fellow, James Buchan, explains that ‘more’ nurses at a national level also needs to translate into the ‘right’ number of nurses locally to provide safe care. This requires consistent application of staffing methods and tools to determine local nurse numbers, deliver safe care to patients, and offer opportunities to increase productivity through improved efficiencies. The Future of Nursing Requires Action! Nurses have been an easy target in organizations for reduced hours and other cutbacks as the largest staffing group, accounting for almost 40% of operating costs. But in their rush to pay their shareholders, many organizations appear to have forgotten that caring for patients is why we go to work every day, and those cuts they make negatively affect patient well-being and nurses' safety. It reminds me of the story about the goose that laid the golden eggs and how its owners destroyed it to try to extract more gold. Nurses can keep providing gold for organizations, but there is only so much that is humanly possible, and hurting nurses to get more out of them by understaffing and overworking is not good for nurses, patients, or their organizations. "The business sense behind optimal nurse staff levels is irrefutable." according to ANA. Organizations must be held accountable for their operations, and public reporting is critical in ensuring this transparency. How else can we hold those organizations using unsafe nurse-patient ratios that hurt nurses and their patients accountable? #nursesonlinkedin #nurses #nurseleaders #nurseleadership #nurseinnovation
