Forest Whitaker: “It is always possible to nurture hope away from home – and it is always a duty for us to ensure that refugees and displaced persons can be offered opportunities to have a place in the world, which is of benefit for all.” On #WorldRefugeeDay, I’m sharing this blog post to honor the countless stories of courage, hope, and resilience. As we mark this day, let’s pledge a collective commitment to supporting refugees’ journeys towards a better future. Empathy and empathising is important
A time for reflection at the end of one of our first Desperate Journeys immersive workshops in Devon. This week, we’ve been allowed to transform St Peter’s Church in Ilfracombe. Desperate Journeys is a powerful refugee crisis workshop based firmly on facts, first-hand accounts, and case studies; it aims to bring home the human stories behind the news headlines. We are working in partnership with The Pickwell Foundation and a wonderful team of volunteers. Over the course of this week, we will be sharing thoughts and reflections from the cast and participants. #empathy #empathymatters #refugeecrisis #refugeeswelcome

Shining a light on the power of the Community How can we know what is best for communities when we are not of their culture and we do not live there? REI knows that strength comes from within the community and we have learnt over the years that the best way to make an impact is through the community. The REI mission is to shift the power to the community. People in local communities are experts in their situations and are best placed to design and implement their own solutions. The millions of displaced people still living near home do not want pity or hand-outs but to lead a normal life with some independence. These forgotten communities have the power to build from within. Stronger communities enable people to be better prepared to manage future incursions. Locally driven interventions and solutions are more responsive, equitable, contextually relevant and sustainable. We become something together that we could never be apart. The impact of young people joining forces in a movement of change makers is truly transformative. When unique giftings and capabilities unite, they become game-changing forces, shaping history through combined efforts. Love Your City embodies this ethos as a global movement of local movements, where young individuals form "leagues of superheroes." These leagues venture into distressed neighborhoods, refugee camps, and slums, spreading hope and making a difference. #LoveYourCity #ChangeMakers #GlobalMovement

Millions of children worldwide are displaced due to conflict and persecution. This Refugee Week, Dream Networks joins the call for empathy and action. Play is a fundamental right, yet countless displaced children are missing out. War and displacement disrupt routines, destroy safe spaces, and leave children feeling isolated and stressed. At Dream Networks, we believe in the power of play as a tool for healing and resilience. This Refugee Week, let's champion the right of every child to play and thrive, no matter their background. Together, we can create safe, nurturing spaces where every child has the chance to grow, learn, and experience the joy of play. 🌍💖 #RefugeeWeek #PowerOfPlay #standwithrefugees #play4all

“#Safe Haven, initially known as Fort Ontario Emergency #Refugee Shelter, was #opened at the #order of President Franklin D. #Roosevelt in #August of 1944 and #housed as many as 982 #refugees, mostly #Jewish, through 1946. They #lived in four #barracks-style buildings on the #Fort Ontario grounds. The park service’s #suitability study also looked at such a #designation for all of Fort Ontario, a #military installation #built by the #British in 1755 and #held by the #Americans during the #Revolutionary War. In the end, the #parks service study found that only the #four buildings #associated with #Safe Haven met all the #criteria. Fort #Ontario is now a #state historic site. “This study finds that the #historic resources directly #associated with the Fort Ontario Emergency #Refugee Shelter ... #meet the #national significance criterion,” the study’s executive summary says. “#Fort Ontario was the #only European #refugee shelter in the #United States and #represents the nation’s #political approach to the #refugee crisis of #World War II, 20th-century #immigration policies, the #Roosevelt administration’s #reaction to #reports of the #Holocaust, and the #actions of the #War Refugee Board.”
It was America’s only Holocaust refugee shelter. Could Oswego’s Safe Haven win National Park status? - NewsBreak
