Today, we commemorate **Juneteenth**, marking the end of slavery in the U.S. On **June 19, 1865**, Union General Gordon Granger announced the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, declaring freedom for enslaved people in the last Confederate state. This pivotal moment came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth, also known as **Emancipation Day** or **Freedom Day**, is a celebration of liberation and the ongoing pursuit of equality. It became a federal holiday in 2021, reflecting its significance in African American history and culture. Across the nation, communities honor this day with parades, festivals, educational events, and cultural activities, celebrating African American heritage and achievements. Let’s continue to celebrate freedom and reflect on the progress and challenges in the journey toward equality. #Juneteenth #EmancipationDay #FreedomDay #AfricanAmericanHeritage #Equality #Freedom

In the context of anti-racism efforts in Ireland, the term "#allyship" often hovers like a well-intentioned, but hollow promise. As a South African navigating the Irish landscape, the gap between #performative allyship and genuine commitment to dismantling racism, becomes glaringly apparent. Allyship, in its current popularised form, too often manifests as a mere label, a tag one slaps on without acknowledging the depth of #responsibility it carries. Many proudly wear the title of #ally without considering the hard work that comes with it. It's become a performative act, a checkbox on the to-do list of #socialvirtue. True allyship demands #introspection, a relentless examination of one's own biases, and a genuine commitment to #change. It requires acknowledging that the fight against #racism isn't a trend; it's an enduring struggle that requires continuous self-education and unlearning. As a South African living in Ireland, I often find myself questioning the sincerity behind the term 'ally.' So, I have thought about a concept introduced to me by a friend - the concept of being an #accomplice - a shift from passive allyship to active participation in the battle against racism. Accomplices are not bystanders; they are co-conspirators in dismantling systems of oppression. They don't just voice support; they get their hands dirty in the messy work of confronting #prejudices, both within themselves and within the structures they inhabit. Becoming an accomplice means acknowledging discomfort and stepping outside the bounds of performative #activism . It's about taking tangible actions to dismantle discriminatory systems, rather than merely signalling virtue. Accomplices recognise that their role isn't to lead the narrative, but to amplify the voices of those DIRECTLY affected by #racism in Ireland. In Ireland, the call for accomplices is urgent. It means actively challenging institutional biases, advocating for policies that address racial disparities, and standing firm against complacency. Accomplices engage in the uncomfortable conversations that move beyond surface-level awareness, delving into the root causes of #systemicracism and working collaboratively to uproot them. Accomplices understand that dismantling racism is not a passive journey. It requires continuous self-reflection, a willingness to make mistakes, and the resilience to learn from them. It means confronting the #privilege that comes with being an outsider, and leveraging that privilege to dismantle barriers for others. As we move forward in the fight against racism in Ireland, let us re-evaluate our commitment. The term 'ally' falls short; what we need are accomplices, individuals unafraid to challenge the status quo, disrupt the norm, and actively contribute to a more just and #inclusive society. It's time to move beyond performative gestures and embrace the transformative power of being an accomplice in the struggle for #racialjustice. Mary Waweru, you inspired this piece🖤

I have never asked for permission to exercise my rights as a human, as a woman and as a mother so why should I seek for approval at this point in my life ? Happy Juneteenth Freedom Day! Honoring Juneteenth is crucial because it commemorates the hard-won freedom of enslaved African Americans, reminding us of the ongoing fight for equality and justice that must be upheld for all. Diversity and inclusion are not just ideals; they are essential for advancing the rights and dignity of every individual, which lies at the heart of what Juneteenth represents. By embracing diversity, we learn from each other, grow in empathy, and ensure that everyone has a say in building a fairer and more inclusive society. Juneteenth resonates deeply with the Jewish community, drawing parallels to our own story of liberation from slavery and emphasizing the path from oppression to freedom. Our shared values such as Herut (Freedom), Tzedek (Justice), Yizkor (Remembrance), Kehillah (Community), and Tikvah (Hope) align closely with the themes celebrated on Juneteenth. Our history of fighting for justice, including marching alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement, underscores our commitment to equality and social justice. As we commemorate this day, I wanted to take the time to reflect that although we are different, we are also aligned in our commitment to creating a fair and inclusive society for all. #JuneteenthFreedom #JusticeForAll #JewishValues #UnityInJustice #EqualityNow #DiversityAndInclusion Natalie Loeb David B.
