Happy Independence Day to our North America community! We are honored this week to celebrate freedom in the ENGIE North America countries we operate in on this Canada Day, July 1, and later this week on U.S. Independence Day, July 4. ENGIE’s global presence is something we are proud to cultivate, and we are grateful for the opportunity to reflect on these two important days that represent our North America #community. Whether you are in the U.S. or Canada, we hope everyone has a safe and wonderful week celebrating with their loved ones, prioritizing #safety and #sustainability by keeping streets clean and being mindful of surroundings and neighbors during any fireworks festivities. #IndependenceDay #CanadaDay #Holiday #Canada #USHoliday

So I went for a bike ride yesterday. It wasn't a very long ride (less than 60km) but it was one that elicited quite a bit of thought about this country of ours. My brother-in-law and I are huge proponents of saying hello to others we see on the road, be it other cyclists, runners or walkers. The old adage being "never too pro to not wave" (not that we're pros but you get the point). And the striking thing is that almost every single time we greet someone, we get a warm, friendly greeting back and usually a big smile too. Having travelled extensively across the world through work, and having gone for at least one run in most of those places, this is probably the ONLY country where this takes place. Why is that? What makes up the "gees" and spirit of South African people in this way? Why do we acknowledge the humanity of others in this way? Is it because we have a history of disregarding humanity previously? I don't think this is it, as I've travelled to many countries that have had chequered pasts as well, and this spirit of togetherness is not there. Instead, it something more. It's in the very soul of this country and her people. Whilst I don't have an actual answer, and this is something merely to provoke thought in those of you who take the time to read this, South Africa remains an incredibly special place. We take this for granted sometimes. And we really shouldn't. The potential of this country, despite all of its problems, is astounding. If we could find more ways to do more together, to unite instead of to divide, to lift up instead of to break down, we really, really could live in our very own paradise. As you start the week ahead, remember this. And do your part to build on this.

What did Canada Day used to be known as pre-1983? Today, July 1st, marks the anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867 when three British colonies - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (later to become Ontario and Quebec) - united to form the 'Dominion of Canada'. Originally called ‘Dominion Day’, the holiday was renamed as ‘Canada Day’ in 1982, seen as a modern shift away from colonial-era terminology. The interesting difference between a ‘colony’ and a ‘dominion’ is that the latter has attained a degree of self-governance whilst remaining loyal - in this instance - to the ethos of the British family, or Crown. Functions of the Crown in the Dominions are not undertaken personally by the sovereign but by a governor-general, appointed by the sovereign (Oxford University Press). Mary Simon is the current governor general of Canada, and is the first Indigenous appointment to the role. She became the 30th governor general of Canada on 26th July 2021. CELEBRATIONS As with many celebrations around the world, fireworks play a central role, with people gathering in parks and waterfronts across the country to see the night skies light up. Many Canadians dress in the national colours of red & white, attending parties and cultural activities, which may include historical reenactments (Halifax) or Indigenous ceremonies (Winnipeg). According to website ‘Ramblyn Jazz’, the day brings mixed feelings amongst Indigenous cultures, due to historical injustices. Though Indigenous communities frequently do use the day to showcase their cultures and contributions to Canadian life. In Montreal, where I spent two-years, this year’s main event will be a family focussed affair in the Old Port of Montreal, which is a fun and vibrant part of the city, full of bars, restaurants and a zip wire for those feeling more daring. In addition to the main celebrations at the Old Port, various Montreal neighbourhoods organise their own Canada Day events. For example, Pierrefonds-Roxboro on the opposite shore of Montreal island, hosts a parade, amusement park, and fireworks. Humanity has lost its meaning. Human kind has now become partly robotic in so many ways.We have forgotten how to talk to one another due to social media platforms and texting. soon mankind might not even need to know any language. body parts that do not function or have been post have been replaced by devices and bionic limbs how long do you think before our dead brain is replaced by artificial intelligence? if that happens will man become immortal? living a part human life. can we procreate there after. or will it be the end of the human race as we know it? answers to these questions present frightening futures for our kids and grandkids. so my answer to this madness is to take off days from technology. spend those off days with loved ones at the beach, park, wild life sanctuaries or just camp out. walk ,hike rude horses. don't use ur cars or bikes. just walk barefooted on the sand connect with nature. explore and examine little creatures that inhabit the seashore,or jungle or even just your back yard. watch the mighty Ant carry it's food, or twigs to build a safe have. watch the birds, bees nature in general. one would be amazed at how much of this world is yet. unknown. God gave us this Earth, with sunshine, wind, rain. have you ever enjoyed a day in the new spring rain. with fine new raindrops sprinkling you,or the smell of newly moistened soil. there is nothing like it. Teach your kids, to enjoy beautiful views, dolphins playing in the ocean, little fish swimming up to them in little puddles between the rocks at the beach. There is so much more. Just go out there, listen to the loud call of birds,or chirping or tweeting. Be Human again my friends. Too soon all this will be out of your grasp. Amazing Mother Earth I thank you daily for what you give. Nourishment, energy, shade, shelter the list is endless.

Here are the facts: ☎️ The average person spends 4 hours and 37 minutes on their phone. 🌳 More than 50% of people spend LESS than 1 hour a day outside. 🧍♀️ Yet our distance ancestors spent virtually all of their time outdoors… 🌴…and outdoors wasn’t paved roads with honking horns and polluting vehicles - it was nature in it’s purest form. 🏡 Is it high time that we reclaim our heritage, reconnect with our essence, and find our way back home?
