Most countries in Southeast Asia now have ambitious long-term clean energy goals, but investments are not yet on track. Eight out of 10 countries in the region have announced target dates of carbon neutrality: Singapore, Malaysia and four others on 2050; Indonesia in 2060; and Thailand in 2065. In addition to significant gaps between investment trends and the long-term goals, there would also need to be a 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙛𝙩 in the allocation of investment towards cleaner technologies: clean power would be the largest share of investment - nearly 40%, according to IEA). Interesting report. It's encouraging to see continued investments in renewables, grids, and storage. It's also notable that nuclear is gaining momentum. However, the question remains: is this enough? One of the other key takeaways is how households are emerging as important actors in clean energy investments. Global renewable energy capacity grew by the fastest pace recorded in the last 20 years in 2023, which could put the world within reach of meeting a key climate target by the end of the decade, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The world’s renewable energy grew by 50% last year to 510 gigawatts (GW) in 2023, the 22nd year in a row that renewable capacity additions set a new record, according to figures from the IEA. The “spectacular” growth offers a “real chance” of global governments meeting a pledge agreed at the Cop28 climate talks in November to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 to significantly reduce consumption of fossil fuels, the IEA added.

At COP28, countries agreed on the need to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030. But there’s a long way to go and we need policy frameworks that support a faster build-out. Global Renewables Alliance has made policy recommendations to meet the 2030 goal. The recommendations span across finance, supply chains, permits and grids to bring more renewable energy to the world, faster. Renewable energy is needed to scale power-to-x, which can bridge the gap between renewable energy and sectors that are difficult to electrify. Power-to-x offers a viable pathway to significantly lower emissions in energy-intensive industries and long-distance transportation that account for around 30% of global carbon emissions.
