If you've known me for a while, you know I dont do work just for money. In fact, I had given up on my development career all-together in favor of my wellness company, where I could see the impact of my work directly. When my company closed down due to the pandemic & separation put and end to my life in Brazil, I moved to Miami with no idea what I would do next. Here I was, a grown up woman with all available resources - highest level of education, big support system, in a city with a booming economy - feeling completely lost. It was in my lowest moment, when I was connected to the Instituto Dara - Dara Institute. Ironically, they were based in Rio, the city I had called my home for so long. I flew back to Brazil to meet some of the most incredible women, mostly single moms, living in the most vulnerable situations, with no support systems, with too many mouths to feed, and no one there to believe in them.. and yet, to my awe, I was dumbstruck by the stories of powerful transformations as a result of their participation in Dara's incredible program, the Family Action Plan. As a recently separated mom, I FELT what they had gone through, and couldn't say no to the offer I received from Dara to become their International Development Lead to help disseminate this methodology & raise funds to reach more vulnerable people, who within two years will make a leap to earn better income, become protagonists of a new life, and transform the lives of their children, families, and communities. I know there are a lot of causes to support. But trust me, this one is VERY unique. The story of the Dr. Vera and her trajectory to change the lives of her most vulnerable patients is heartwarming, while more than 30 years of unmatched work as LAC's #1NGO - beyond impressive. As a development specialist, I've never seen so much impact created with such little resources. Tomorrow, we stuff our bellies and remind ourselves of what we are thankful for. I am thankful for being born in a solidly middle-class zip code where I was afforded a great deal of opportunity. The people born on the other end of the zip code lottery don't have a zip code. Or even mail. They are born into #ultrapoverty in rural #africa. The entire deck is stacked against them. Few schools. Few jobs. Poor nutritional options. Housing made of sticks. No fuel other than the forest. FGM. A constant battle for basic resources. #alshabaab. Multi-year #droughts interspersed with biblical #floods and actual plagues of #locusts. We are talking about 400+ million people. More than live in the US. But helping rural Africans move out of ultra-poverty is not conceptually hard and not that expensive. It's called #povertygraduation, and it has been proven to work with randomized control trials. It is something that anyone can contribute to, knowing they are moving the needle on making the world work better for its poorest inhabitants. It only takes less than two years of intense mentoring and a tiny bit of seed capital. And then the community is changed...forever. Women find their voice and have agency. Children are more likely to be fed and clothed and go to school. FGM is reduced. Savings and incomes go up. #Foodsecurity improves. #mentalhealth improves. As a #philanthropist, I looked for years to find something with this #impact. A #handup, not a #handout. #empowerment over #dependence. A limited-duration intervention that has a lasting impact. That addresses #genderinequality, #poverty, #sustainabledevelopment, #livelihood, #education, #fgm...even #climatechange. This is what BOMA.ngo achieves. Below is a link to their impact. Health Equity North's vision is to end health inequity through research, policy impact, and public health improvement - which is why we support the Children's Prosperity Plan’s blueprint to reform the benefit system to become fairer, and work towards lifting families out of relative poverty. We believe that, in the long run, implementing these changes will pay for itself with the inevitable increase in productivity and improvement in health outcomes.

The increasing wealth divide in the UK and extent of deep poverty have not really figured much in the current election campaign, so I was particularly keen to chair this Religion Media Centre briefing to try to redress the balance. Speakers representing faith charities describe the “deep poverty” in society, with many families unable to find enough support to even afford the essentials. There is some blue-sky thinking too, as some speakers argue that the current model of state support with charities picking up the pieces showed the system really had failed. They say there is a need for a root-and-branch approach to social inequality. It's a complex issue which defies simple solutions but unless it's tackled head-on, speakers feel things are unlikely to improve.
