Director Of Construction Technology at Wm. Blanchard Co.- Industry Speaker & Construction Technology Evangelist 🏗️- Engaging Presenter
It might be valuable to emphasize to young professionals that while their early career may involve hardhats, overalls, and wrenches, it can evolve into the types of roles you mentioned. There seems to be a common misconception that starting in a trade means being locked into that path forever. While staying in the field is a great option for many, it’s important to highlight that there are plenty of opportunities for growth and career development beyond that.
I keep hearing about "Labor Shortages" in construction. I keep hearing about how we need to "recruit" the next generation. The question I have is... who is it...*exactly*...we're trying to recruit? Aside from a few great programs like Heavy Metal Summer Experience, the vast majority of "recruiting" efforts I see companies making seem to be focused on only one part of the equasion. That part? Non-Trades. Project Managers. Project Engineers. Architects. Designers. BIM/VCS. Software Developers. ...etc.... So who's actually going to "build" ? If you don't have enough people for an orchestra, you're not going to fix it by hiring more conductors. While I do personally dispute some of the "labor shortage" narrative, those who keep banging that drum for the most part seem to just ignore recruiting of the actual do'ers... the trades themselves. Perhaps my perspective is off as a fellow Office/Desk dweller in this industry. Anyone want to try to reorient my thinking? Or confirm my observations?

If you’re an owner/operator, you’re eternally torn between... Building your sales pipeline, and performing the work you already have. Recently, we worked with a contractor who was in this exact position. Her bandwidth was maxed out, and despite steady revenue numbers, growth had stalled. She had an epiphany: to scale, she needed to split her duties. As a smaller residential contractor, running the business involved everything from pre-con, bid out, permitting, inspection walks, engineering & architectural sign-offs,...etc etc.. alongside BD efforts. No one sells like the owner, right? 😉 After a few hours of diagnostic meetings, we built a job description for a Director of Construction, and launched the search. We closed it out in under a month. Now, with a dedicated operational leader in place to focus on delivery, she's free to focus on implementing new systems, processes, and technologies, and, most importantly, working with customers—her passion and strength. The result? They are positioned for growth … and as an owner she now gets to focus in on her zone of genius. Remember, the cost of delegation can be minimal compared to the growth it enables. Build your bench, make your mark. . . . #hiring #construction #recruiting #bybmym

So here's the bind I am in at the moment, I have the market telling me that things are really slow right now, projects are being pushed and delayed and there is not as much hiring happening. Logic would tell us that I should now have a huge candidate pool to play with and can fill the roles I do have, yet at the moment I am coming up short on qualified candidates for the current roles: #ProjectManager #ProjectCoordinator #Superintendent #Estimator #DevelopmentManager Is this a sign of things to come? Is there that much of a lack of qualified candidates coming through in the slow times? When the "boom" comes back and it certainly will are we in for a massive shortage of construction professionals? In saying all of that, if you are looking for something new and companies with a pipeline of work spanning over a decade then please give me a shout today. shaun.lawthom@SkylineRL.com

Perfect on paper and in person.. but not perfect for the job. We recently hired a Senior Project Manager for an architectural millwork firm outside of Denver. He presented exceptionally, passed our extensive process, and had (multiple) incredible on-site conversations with ownership - even discussing an equity track in the near future. Yet, within two weeks of his start, he put in his notice as he was offered a different position he "couldn't pass up". This was a stark reminder that no matter how great a recruiter or hiring manager you are, we are still working with human beings. All parties involved were stunned.. except the candidate of course. We pride ourselves on a low refill rate - but sometimes we are reminded - people are people. This industry will never be black and white. It’s as much an art as it is a science. Sometimes, things happens. Always be wary of anyone promising 100% certainty in hiring. Embrace the human element and understand that unpredictability is part of the game. An effective search partner knows how to account for most variables - but it will never be absolute. (Don't worry - we already have submitted replacement candidates) . . . #hiring #recruiting #construction #bybmym
