Community engagement is a complex process that requires careful consideration of various factors. In local government contexts, it is important to cultivate meaningful relationships with community members, facilitate inclusive dialogue, and empower them to participate in decision-making processes. By doing so, we can drive positive change and promote social cohesion in our communities. It is crucial to use effective communication strategies, actively listen to the needs and concerns of community members, and work collaboratively to find solutions that benefit everyone. Through community engagement, we can build stronger, more connected communities that are better equipped to tackle the challenges of our time. #CommunityEngagement #InclusiveDialogue #PositiveChange

Community development isn't just about making grand statements or setting lofty goals—it's about creating real, lasting change. To ensure your plans drive meaningful impact, consider these three tangible takeaways: Engage with Local Voices: Involve community members in the planning process to ensure the initiatives address their real needs and aspirations. Their insights are invaluable for crafting relevant and effective solutions. Set Clear, Measurable Goals: Define specific objectives and leading/lagging indicators for success. This clarity will help track progress, adjust strategies as needed, and demonstrate accountability. Build Sustainable Partnerships: Collaborate with local organizations, businesses, and leaders to pool resources and expertise. Strong partnerships enhance the effectiveness of your initiatives and ensure long-term sustainability. Let's move beyond mere intentions and work towards tangible, positive change in our communities. 🌍 #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableChange #LocalEngagement

Strategic Engagement & Communications | Social Impact | Leadership | Managing Director @ Mara Consulting
It's great to see another Mara Consulting project get the green light. But as the Newcastle Herald article points out, there was "fierce community opposition". For me, this is why tokenistic terms like "Social licence" don't cut it. Why? It's such a misleading term that does nothing for improving outcomes for communities. It also sets the false expectation that community opposition leads to stopping projects and there must be acceptance of a project's or oranisation's operations by stakeholders. ❓ I'm keen to hear from other fellow engagement practitioners about what our role is in contentious projects if social licence is out of the equation? ❓How do you define what's negotiable to be clear about the input you're seeking? ❓How do you add value and focus on outcomes that are meaningful to the community? I'm looking forward to speaking on the topic ‘Why social licence is so 1990s’ at the upcoming NewH2 Hunter Energy Symposium later this month and exploring how engagement should be a strategic business tool rather than just seen as having a cuppa with a landowner or sponsoring the local footy team. #HNES2024 #CommunityEngagement
We're pleased to have been involved in another state significant development approval 🌟🚦As the article says, there was “fierce community opposition” to this project! But the applicant’s success in gaining development consent is evidence of a genuine and robust #engagement program that stood up to scrutiny. #TeamMara led the community engagement and social impact assessment for this NSW project, which enabled our client to develop solutions that addressed community feedback and stood up to the rigorous assessment of the Department of Planning.
