Growing innovation in recycling. 🌱 Australian SMEs working in recycling and circular economy are invited to apply for our latest eight-week Innovate to Grow program, delivered in partnership with Deakin University's Recycling and Clean Energy Commercialisation Hub (REACH). The program, which is led by experienced researchers, helps participants examine technical and business challenges, explore research and development (R&D) opportunities, and develop actionable business and funding plans for their R&D idea. Ecolife bottles represent a groundbreaking initiative that transforms waste into a sustainable future. This innovative business idea, developed by my incredible coursemates and me, exemplifies the core principles of sustainability that chemical engineers uphold. By converting biodegradable waste into durable, eco-friendly plastic bottles, we aim to promote a cleaner world with minimal pollution and reduced carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. Establishing such businesses as a norm makes the vision of a cleaner, greener world highly achievable. I sincerely thank Covenant University, NSChE CUSC and the Centre for Entrepreneurial Development Studies for offering me the platform to collaborate with my peers on this revolutionary business concept. Ecolife bottles…turning waste into a sustainable future. My coursemates and I came up with this business idea. There is no better way to embody the sustainability principles that chemical engineers hold dear than to establish a company that turns biodegradable waste into long-lasting, environmentally friendly plastic bottles. When companies like this become commonplace, a clean world with minimal pollution and carbon and greenhouse gas emissions is very likely to be achieved. I am grateful to Covenant University and Centre for Entrepreneurial Development Studies for providing this opportunity to enable me create this business in collaboration with my course mates. Our economy throws 90% of the materials we use into landfills. And a recent CSIRO report revealed that only 4% of materials in Australia are used in a closed loop, with the majority ending up as waste - half the global average. With all the high-level discussions about the circular economy, we need to accept that we're not even a recycling economy right now. Given that our waste problem is a design problem, and our human and tech-centric systems have landed us in this mess, many innovators have been looking to nature for inspiration on how a materials economy can exist within planetary boundaries.
