🟢 Welcome to Elisava Research, Alberto Imberti and Claudia Zampella! They have recently begun their doctoral journeys as part of the CoDesign4Transitions European project, leaded by RMIT Europe and co-supervised by Elisava. Alberto is a strategic designer who has worked across industries to solve complex digital service challenges through human-centred research, service design, and design thinking. Alberto's project 'Investigating and amplifying practices for circular design' will investigate how circular practices can be designed to promote social inclusion and equity, ensuring that the benefits of a circular economy are accessible to all societal groups. Claudia is a service and learning experience designer, specialising in co-design strategies and methodologies, facilitation and the design of educational programs within the realms of social innovation and ecology. Claudia's project 'Prototyping policy options in spaces for experimentation and learning for urban climate transitions' will explore which co-design methodologies and tools are most effective in engaging diverse perspectives in the creation and execution of policies. - Existential sustainability - In recent years, there has been a growing need in society to broaden the conversation about sustainability beyond the traditional pillars of social, environmental and economic concerns. There's a call to include the existential dimensions of human life. The Agenda 2030 Graduate School offered a PhD course on existential sustainability, which concluded with a student conference with paper presentations. The course was collaborative effort between the Center for Theology and Religious Studies and the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at LTH. Typically, for our Sustainability and Green Technology Enrichment Programme, the last session of Term 3 is a poster presentation where students choose a city and apply their knowledge to design a sustainable city. However, we realised that designing a sustainable city was mainly a paper exercise - while it got the students thinking, it had low stakes. In addition, the day of the presentation feels like the end - technically nothing needs to be done after. Therefore, this year we decided to take a leap of faith and worked with multiple companies and organisations to provide the students with opportunities to work on authentic scenarios which will be implemented at the end. This means raising the stakes for the students, and allowing them to practice what they have learnt. To prepare them, other than providing them with knowledge on sustainability and the other disciplines, we provided them with training on creative problem solving, pitching, as well as scientific communication skills. Today was the mid-term review of their project, where the students got a chance to showcase their progress to their peers, as well as a few teachers and school leaders. The question and answer (or grilling) segment after gave the students a chance to see the gaps in their projects, as well as how to move forward. I think today's mid-term review went well, and I look forward to seeing their final product next term! I was just about to close my computer and take a few weeks off, when I stumbled over this beautiful read from Lund University! Fantastic summer literature. “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. Designing sustainable laboratories is challenging. There are many specific requirements, unknown future occupiers, and technical complexities.  How can we navigate the trade-off between adaptability and the carbon footprint when constructing life science buildings?   'Transforming to Zero' tackles exactly this. Adopting a balanced product and market fit approach, the initiative offers practical, robust, and achievable guidance on low-carbon and flexible lab design.
