Multiple Myeloma is a complex cancer and patients can face many challenges in the path to diagnosis, with the vague symptoms often being mistaken for normal signs of ageing or other diseases. It’s great to see OncLive launching a new series focusing on the remaining unmet needs in multiple myeloma and how we can optimise care. In the inaugural episode, an expert panel discusses how we can address pressing issues such as limited understanding or symptoms, awareness of and accessibility to testing, and delays to diagnosis. The NHS is revolutionising oesophageal cancer diagnosis with a simple "sponge-on-a-string" test. Developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, this innovative approach eliminates the need for endoscopy, making the process quicker, cost-effective, and reducing waiting lists. Sunvozertinib, which targets exon20 insertion mutations in lung cancer, had an abstract presented at ASCO this year.   This was a small sample size of 97 patients, but there was a confirmed ORR of 60.8% in these patients. Amivantamab has a reported ORR of around 40% and mobocertinib is 28%. The Reach for a Ribbon campaign, held at the Wits Medical campus, is committed to cancer awareness. Teaming up with the Wits Students’ Surgical Society and TELL, the initiative prioritises educating on liver cancer. It's essential to highlight that for specific patients, a liver transplant can be a life-saving measure. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the predominant form of primary liver cancer, often seen in individuals with chronic liver conditions such as cirrhosis resulting from hepatitis B or hepatitis C infections. The risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma, the primary subtype of liver cancer, is higher among those with long-standing liver issues, particularly if the liver shows scarring due to hepatitis B or C. Additionally, individuals who excessively consume alcohol and those with liver fat accumulation face elevated risks. For certain individuals in good health with localized liver cancer, liver transplant surgery is a feasible option. This procedure involves removing the diseased liver entirely and replacing it with a healthy liver from a donor. Liver transplant serves as a recognized therapeutic avenue for primary liver carcinomas like hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), hepatoblastoma, and hemangioendothelioma, as well as liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumors. The broadening of oncological indications for liver transplant has been facilitated by the overall improvement in survival rates post-transplantation. #reachforaribbon #livercancer #livertransplant
