Not all Ramadans need to be like the 20-year-old student's no-responsibility, no-job, pray all night, read Quran all day, dat-feels-good Ramadan. Nor are they meant to be. If you're a single mother and between work, taking care of your child, and scraping together the bare minimum societal standards of basic hygiene, you can just about find time to pray 5 times a day and keep your fast, then that's your Ramadan. And your reward may be more than the 20-year-old's. If you're working two jobs trying to support your wife and kids and can only find time to listen to Quran and do dhikr on the commute between jobs, then that's your Ramadan. If you've graduated and this is your first Ramadan working full time in a city firm and you feel overwhelmed, then that's your Ramadan. You don't need to read as many khatms of the Quran as you did when you were 19. You didn't have a job then and now you do, so that's 8-10 hours a day you have less than before. That's nothing to feel guilty about. If you're studying for your finals and you have to prioritise revision over taraweeh, then that's your Ramadan. The ummah needs your qualifications and expertise. We should always strive to continuously improve our Ramadan, and never be content with what we're doing. But at the same time understand that it's not all about quantity. Don't beat yourself up if you can't do as much as another person; your circumstances differ. And don't beat yourself up if you can't do as much as you did in a previous year. Your current circumstances are different from your previous ones. Take the essence from Ramadan and use the opportunity to connect with your Lord. Speak to Him. Cry. Beg Him. Plead for mercy and guidance. Sometimes one line can outweigh an entire month's reading of the Quran. -Dr Salah Sharief-

“We are not gangsters. We are ACS boys!” This has been going viral in formal as well as informal group chats. Those of you who are not familiar with Singapore schools will wonder why would anyone shout “We are ACS boys!” when caught “red handed” in such a raid. It is because of “pride”! Anglo Chinese School - aka ACS - is a very well known school in Singapore. It is an excellent school. It is also very well known for its strong alumni. Its alumni has very strong identity as well. It is one of those schools that parents would like their kids to be in. Kids get first class education and first class networks in schools like ACS. I have heard so many stories when folks go for job interviews, they get asked “You are an ACS boy too?” and the next thing they know is that they get employed. This is the power of a good school network and strong alumni! And i have been saying that school alumni could even be more important than the education kids receive from schools. Probably more so in current and future times. But hey! Don’t shout “We are ACS boys!” next time you are caught in such a situation lah. Just shout “We are RI boys!” or “We are Hwa Chong boys!”lah. On 4th June 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at the Closing The Gap X Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ) Scholarship Application Workshop as a Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) Malaysia scholar, alongside two other fellow JPA scholars from KTJ and scholars from Petronas and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). Here are some key takeaways from my presentation: 1. Flexibility in course selection: Unlike other scholarships, JPA scholarship allows you to choose any course you desire (with certain exceptions). Therefore, if you're still unsure about your future career path, that's perfectly fine. 2. Importance of Bahasa Melayu (BM): BM proficiency is crucial. Debates and interviews are conducted in both languages, so it's essential to articulate your thoughts well in both English and BM. 3. Adherence to guidelines: Follow the guidelines. Dress appropriately according to the dress code and ensure all necessary documents are printed. This demonstrates your preparedness, which JPA assesses during the application process. 4. Satu Malaysia: Be knowledgeable about Malaysia. Basic facts about the country may be asked during the interview process.
