As key enablers for the energy transition, our analysis shows that solar power, wind energy, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and green hydrogen face multiple bottlenecks that must be addressed to ensure their sustained growth in the global shift towards a low-carbon future. Despite the risks to a quick and orderly energy transition posed by these bottlenecks, there are multiple unlocks available today that, if harnessed, could mitigate delays. We’re helping to raise awareness of best practices to save energy and the environment. Using a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) to transfer geothermal energy from the ground into buildings can help to save energy. For one unit of electricity used by a GSHP, three to four units of heat are captured and transferred! 💡 At our GeoEnergy Discovery Centre, we’re doing our bit to save energy by using rechargeable batteries and solar panels. Natural gas will continue through 2050, because solar doesn't work at night even with batteries. Anyone that says different is lying to you. Natural gas would continue to be the stabilizer in the global energy matrix as variable renewable energy (VRE) sources take on prominence in the decades to come. “Why Wind and Solar Need Natural Gas: A Realistic Approach to Variability” was authored by Robin Gaster, director of research at the Washington, DC-based Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s (ITIF) Center for Clean Energy Innovation. https://lnkd.in/e3sMxSHy Gaster said VREs bring with them the problem of unpredictability. When there is less wind or cloudy days, for example, VRE power would not be available for dispatch. https://lnkd.in/ehKEiR5P

As renewable energy becomes more prevalent, how can we ensure the electric grid withstands the impact of extreme weather? In a first-of-its-kind study, analysts from NREL and Sharply Focused modeled scenarios to understand the answers to these questions and change the way we define "extreme weather." The study found that traditional extreme weather events don't necessarily pose greater challenges to a grid with more wind and solar power. However, prolonged moderate weather conditions, like several days of low wind and solar energy during hot or cold spells, could create new challenges. This highlights the need for new strategies to ensure the reliability and resilience of a future renewable energy grid. To meet rising energy demands while minimizing its carbon footprint, Germany has committed to generating at least 80% of their electrical consumption from renewable sources by 2030 and being climate-neutral by 2045. Achieving these lofty goals requires the newly built energy sources, such as wind, geothermal, and solar power, to be integrated into the grid and the existing infrastructure to be updated. With communities and governmental bodies pressuring the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to find alternatives to overhead power lines and combat the unpredictability of power loss as it travels, their solution is to bury the power cables in the ground in a project known as SuedLink.
