This is a question I've grappled with throughout my career, particularly in the RV space, where the technician role often lacks the definition and visibility it has in the automotive world. Interestingly, despite the differences in industries, one thing remains the same: top-performing technicians, whether in RV, automotive, or powersports, seek opportunities to perform at their best, earn competitively, and deliver quality work to their customers. At Bish's RV, Inc., we’ve spent this past year really listening to our technicians - both new hires and veterans. We’ve asked questions like, "Why do you stay?" and "What would make you consider leaving?" These insights have shaped how we communicate, collaborate, and create a work environment that our technicians value. There’s still time for David Calhoun to finish well at Boeing. It’s time for some heart-felt changes and value-based decisions: 1. Learn from Alan Mulally how to turnaround a company viz. Ford Motor Company. Leverage his experience in commercial aviation at Boeing by hiring him as a consultant. 2. Avoid ‘knee-jerk’ reactions and quick-fix approaches. Create a well-thought plan to solve the systemic issues viz. design challenges and quality systems errors. 3. Hire a CEO with an aeronautical engineering background to succeed the current CEO.

If you want to focus on short-term revenues and downsize a bloated organization, by all means hire a Jack Welsh disciple. But if you need to fix the safety culture of an aerospace engineering company, hire an manager with deep Aerospace & Safety engineering chops. You get exactly the leadership you hire. Boeing doesn't have a revenue or a bloated workforce problem, they have a quality & safety culture problem. Short term + Outsourcing thinking never solves cultural defects. ...and you need to live in the factory.

What a great post Midwest Aerospace Casting. I am saving this photo as an example of proper aluminized safety clothing. Aluminized fabric is worn because it reflects 95% of the radiant heat. Radiant heat can affect a worker's heart, lungs, kidneys, liver. As well as workers exposed to radiant heat can become sterile. As I tell workplaces if the radiant heat exposure is from the front of the worker. Then the back panel of the clothing can be secondary. Just like this photo. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: there has never been a better time to be in the collision repair industry. However, one challenge has come up in nearly all of my conversations with key industry leaders: the technician shortage. It’s a universally acknowledged problem, but solutions differ. My take? Our challenges exist at two levels: Macro: We need to better market the industry as a whole to the next generation of technicians. (Shoutout to organizations like I-CAR and Collision Repair Education Foundation for moving us in the right direction) Micro: Individual shops need to look inward and invest in their teams to create and market an attractive opportunity. We’re competing against other industries for the same talent… let’s win!
