🤦♂️ Thanks to EU, European consumers will probably have to pay 1 € to download an app. During years, Apple paids the bill for distribution of apps: a cost absorbed by global fees, a good model. But EU, for political reasons, enter in the business with a new model. And clearly without consulting small developers. For an independent developer: - you have 2M downloads - 5 % users are paying 2 € month - 100k€ revenues Today monthly fees: 1 250 € With new laws: 46 373 € The only choice to guarantee same revenue? Ask European consumers to pay 1 € to download the app, absorbing the distribution cost (0,5 € + taxes + fees). Free in other countries. If you consider things globally, download cost is under revenue. But, individually, cost can be over revenue. https://lnkd.in/ePyyza4A

Apple is a monopoly and needs to be broken up. They own the hardware, OS, developer apps, iOS stores and can say yes or no to any app while charging them 30%. STORY 1: Apple has told Patreon that it must switch to its billing system or risk removal from the App Store. Apple has threatened to remove the creator platform Patreon from the App Store if creators use unsupported third-party billing options or disable transactions on iOS instead of using Apple’s own in-app purchasing system for Patreon’s subscriptions. Good luck Fountain, Wavlake and other iOS podcast apps not using Apple’s purchasing system. Micropayment SATs will be banned when they get big enough to be noticed like Damus was banned. Other Nostr apps will also be banned too. They are just too small right now to matter to Apple. TrueFans overcomes this Apple limitation by not being an iOS app. We are a PWA (Progressive Web App) We use Stripe an approved Apple payment gateway so even if we were a proprietary iOS app we wouldn't fall foul of Apple’s payment police. STORY 2: Apple will let EU developers link to external payment options — but they’ll have to pay Apple a cut of off-platform sales, even if the user never clicks the link. Apple is tweaking its App Store rules in the EU after regulators charged the company with breaking the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in June. At first glance, the updated rules appear to give developers more freedom when linking to outside purchases — but a restrictive new fee structure will force developers to pay Apple a commission for sales made across any platform, not just iOS, for as long as they include outside links. Steve Jobs said he hated Flash then built it for Apple. iOS is closed and proprietary and everyone who says they support open standards like RSS and have a go at Spotify and YouTube for being proprietary are hypocrites because they build or use iOS apps instead of using open web standards. I have many users tell me, we will only use TrueFans when it's an iOS app but still shout they support open standards. Think Different as Apple once said.

With #iOS 17.4, Apple has begun to unbundle updates to its mobile operating system for Europeans. It is now possible to install a different App Store. This is how the AltStore and Epic Game Store were created. But things are about to go much further. Identified with iOS as a #gatekeeper by the European Union, Apple has no choice but to comply with the #DMA's requirements in order to continue selling its products in Europe. In a blog post aimed at developers, Apple explains that users in the European Union will have more choice when it comes to configuring their favorite apps by default. Since iOS 14, it has been possible to replace the browser or mail client. But the company had only done the bare minimum. Third-party editors were still obliged to use the default rendering engine - WebKit. It wasn't until the DMA came into force that things changed, giving alternative browsers greater flexibility. Huge news from Apple in the EU 🇪🇺 In response to the Digital Markets Act, Apple will allow app downloads from outside the App Store for the first time in iOS 17.4, beginning in March. Apple is reducing its default revenue cut from 30% to 17% - (and it drops to 10% after one year) though it’s not currently clear if that applies only to paid and subscription apps, or free apps as well. I’m also confused about Bloomberg News’ reporting here which states that Apple is ADDING a new fee for IAP of 3%, for purchases using Apple’s billing and not the newly allowed third-party billing solutions. Regardless of download source, all apps with over 1M downloads will be subject to €0.50 fee per download - reminiscent of Unity’s highly unpopular Runtime Fee it revealed last year. This is the biggest change to App Store policies EVER, and I look forward to learning more about the details I’m unclear on soon. Apple's 30% commission structure facing headwinds in Europe. Apple Inc. is embarking on an historic overhaul of its iOS, Safari and App Store offerings in the European Union, aiming to placate regulators set to impose tough new antitrust rules. Includes 3rd-party stores, side loading, new commissions (10% to 17%), third-party tap to pay apps and all-in-one game streaming services. "The company has introduced two additional fees: a 3% payment processing charge for apps that use Apple’s in-app purchase system, and a €0.50 fee per app install — via Apple’s store or third-party marketplaces — for software installed more than 1 million times" Europe is significant for Apple but nothing compared to the US profit pool. Apple is undergoing the most significant policy shift in its App Store. Software companies alerts ⤵️ 1️⃣ EU Ecosystem Opening Apple opens iOS and App Store to third-party stores and alternative payments in the EU, following Digital Markets Act requirements. 2️⃣ Commission Restructure New EU business terms include a 17% commission, reduced for certain revenues, with a 3% fee for Apple's payment system and no fee for third-party payments. 3️⃣ The "€0.5" Download Fee Apple introduces a 0.5 euro fee per download after the first million, impacting apps with high download rates but lower in-app payment revenues. What is going on with Apple?! On January 25, Apple announced changes coming in March 2024 to follow DMA rules. They'll now notarize all iOS apps for every user, no matter where they're sold. In the EU, developers can have their own app store, but it needs Apple's approval and a human review process. These stores will handle their refunds and can use third-party payment processors. However, non-App Store apps will face a controversial 0.50 Euro Core Technology Fee for the first install annually, waived for the first million installs. Some believe Apple's changes to comply with DMA are just a way of doing what's required without real commitment... but what will happen in the end? Simply put, the European Commission is taking it seriously. Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market openly said that " If the proposed solutions are not good enough, we will not hesitate to take strong action". Apple introduced the Apple Account card in the U.S. with iOS 15.5 in 2022. Now, with iOS 17.6, the card is available in Canada and Australia. This card in the Wallet app shows your Apple Account balance, which can be used for purchases on the App Store, Apple Store online, and at physical Apple Stores with tap-to-pay. Previously, Apple offered iTunes Pass, but the Apple Account card is simpler, allowing for easier tap-to-pay transactions. To add the card, open the Wallet app, press the "+" button, and select the Apple Account card under "Available Cards." You may need a balance on your Apple Account to add it.
