This Monday, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action hosted the inaugural session of the Indonesian-German Economic and Investment Committee in Berlin. The event, opened by German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Dr. Robert Habeck, and Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, focused on deepening economic exchanges between Germany and Indonesia, covering industry, trade & investment, energy, and human resource development. Consensus was reached on prioritizing digital and climate-friendly technologies, with business representatives from both countries sharing insights into their projects. Pei Albrecht represented ALBA Group Asia at this significant event. In 2022, ALBA Group Asia entered the Indonesian plastics recycling market through a joint venture with PT Tridi Oasis Group, with the first project located in #Tangerang. This marks a significant step forward for Indonesia towards its near-zero plastic pollution target by 2040. Since the launch of our #Kendal project in July 2023, progress has been steady. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the facility will process PET beverage bottles into high-quality rPET flakes and food-grade rPET pellets. Leveraging expertise from our German-based sister company, Interzero, and similar ALBA projects in Asia, our goal is to assist Indonesia in reducing plastic waste impact by boosting collection rates through market creation initiatives. I was truly inspired by the vibrant and passionate community of industry leaders, eco-entrepreneurs, and #climate and #sustainability champions that I met at the #LangkahMembumi Festival last weekend! The highlight was the “Menular Ekonomi Sirkular” session with Wisnu Nugroho, Angeline Callista, Benedict Wermter, and Rayden Yap, where they shared insights and ideas on how to spread the #circulareconomy in #Indonesia. Three key ways stood out to me: 1/ Advocating to all stakeholders is crucial for driving meaningful behavior change and fostering long-term commitment. Angeline, for instance, shared how Sirsak engages with informal waste collectors and aggregators to help them become more knowledgeable in waste sorting, which improves recyclability. Additionally, she collaborates with companies to implement best practices in their circular initiatives and helps them uncover value in their waste. However, it’s not enough to simply present the solutions. To drive behavior change and foster commitment, it’s equally important to identify and clearly demonstrate why these options are the best fit for each stakeholder, ensuring they align with their goals and needs while making these information easy to access and understand. 2/ Achieving a true circular economy requires not only downstream solutions like recycling and upcycling waste but also upstream approaches that minimize waste at its source. Additionally, strong and well-enforced legislation is essential to support this transition. For instance, the #EU recently adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which includes measures to make packaging more sustainable and sets ambitious reduction targets. Non-compliance with the PPWR may lead to fines for producers who fail to meet these standards. 3/ There’s so much anyone can do. For instance, there’s still a need for a unified, holistic movement in Indonesia to push the government and businesses to change their practices and fully commit to true circular economy principles. But simply, change can also start on a personal level. Tomorrow, try waking up with an awareness of single-use plastics around you—notice them, and consider if you really need them. When reaching for a juice or another item that comes in plastic, simply pause for a moment and ask yourself if there’s a sustainable alternative. Kudos to Blibli.com and Ecoxyztem for organizing such an important and impactful event for Indonesia’s climate and sustainability ecosystem. All comments welcome. Photo by me.

As 2024 winds down, I wanted to hit pause for a second and say thank you to all of our Retailers and Brand Partners. Your support, partnership, and belief in what we’re building at GOT BAG means the world. It’s because of people like you that we’ve been able to create so much impact, and I’m stoked to share some highlights from this year with you: Through our foundation in Indonesia, we’ve achieved some incredible milestones: Over 700,000 lbs of plastic collected and recycled, fully blockchain-tracked and verified by our partner CleanHub.To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of: 2.1 blue whales 🐋 53 elephants 🐘 2 Boeing 747s ✈️ Or even 707 grand pianos 🎹 Our work didn’t stop at cleanups. Through our foundation, we’ve been planting the seeds of change: 131 students from 2 schools joined our environmental program, learning firsthand about sustainability and plastic pollution. Every student received a copy of an environmental education book we co-created—discussed, read, and put into action in their studies. We also hosted a 2-day Youth Environment Camp for 43 students with activities like beach cleanups, creative recycling workshops, inspiring lectures, and mangrove planting. Since pictures (and videos) speak louder than words, check out this video from our phenomenal team in Indonesia: Impact of GOT BAG in Indonesia. https://lnkd.in/gEtTGnQh Of course, it’s easy to talk about the wins, but none of this came easy. Every milestone was the result of long days, tough conversations, and a relentless belief that what we’re doing matters. And it does. The truth is also, that none of this would be possible without people like you. Alone, we’re just a drop, but together, we’re creating waves of change. 2024 was phenomenal, but I have no doubt 2025 will be even bigger and better. Let’s keep building on this momentum, pushing boundaries, and making this planet a better place, together. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and an incredible start to the New Year. Here’s to more impact, more growth, and more wins in 2025! Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Driving the Future of Circular Economy in Industrial Parks In today's rapidly evolving industrial landscape, the shift towards a circular economy is no longer optional—it’s essential. Industrial parks present a unique opportunity to foster this transformation by serving as hubs of resource efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth. During a recent workshop with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), our experts, Dr. Desti Alkano and Candra Sutama, explored key strategies to harness the potential of industrial parks as enablers of the circular economy. The discussion highlighted three crucial factors: • Agglomeration & Resource Optimization: Concentrated industries drive efficient resource utilization, minimizing waste and enhancing resource sharing. • Industrial Symbiosis & Cross-Sector Collaboration: Diverse industries collaborate to transform by-products into valuable inputs, reducing environmental impact and creating value. • Government & Policy Support: Regulatory frameworks and incentives create an environment conducive to the adoption of sustainable practices. We thank to the organizing committee, i.e. the UNIDO – GEIPP Indonesia and the Ministry of Industry, and our fellow speakers, Dewi Muliana, Director of Industrial Regional Development at the Ministry of Industry, and Priyanto Rohmatullah, Director of Environment at Bappenas, for an insightful and inspiring session. We’re happy to see the growing interest to adopting circular economy practices in industrial parks across Indonesia. The momentum is growing, and we believe that by rethinking business models, investing in technology, and strengthening partnerships, we can build a more resilient and sustainable industrial future. #CircularEconomy #IndustrialParks #Sustainability #ECADIN #UNIDO #Collaboration #Innovation #ResourceEfficiency
