[EVENT] Last week, our Director of Public Affairs, Paul Brannen, participated in the 9th International Conference "Modernization of Forestry in Bosnia and Herzegovina," held in Kupres. ⁉ On this occasion, he took part in a “Question and Answer” session on the difficulties presented by the #EUDR and then joined a panel discussing wider issues with regards the promotion of an increased use of wood in construction. In addition, the opportunity to generate and sell carbon credits derived from carbon stored in wood products in the built environment was discussed in the context of the benefits of building more with timber. 🌲 🌳 The forest trip revealed that forest cover in Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently around 55% (although some figures put it higher) and the intention is to increase this to 60%. This expansion should be able to generate new carbon credits as this forest cover will be ‘additional’ and should meet all the necessary criteria linked to credits linked to new forestry. The ongoing issue of sections of the forest still containing landmines from the time of the war was highlighted. In turn this reduces the potential wood supply from the forest. The conference welcomed more than 200 attendees from Bosnia and Herzegovina but also from all over Europe. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d3WUZhuS

Is this a dilemma for us as Australians? I welcome class actions as they are about changing the status quo of a system from where a group of people has suffered because the system does not recognise their issue(s) within present-day laws that may be outdated. The fishing system for Aboriginal people is thousands of years old and continuity of Aboriginal culture, traditions, and customs and this system relies on Cultural practices to maintain its importance to the next generation. The present-day Australian fishing system is 250 years old and does not recognise the Aboriginal relationship to sea - lakes - rivers and their resources. The story is having an impact on Aboriginal people who are prepared to go to jail for their cultural continuity and some, it's their first brush with the law because they are law-abiding people. For others, Aboriginal people will continue to break the law for their cultural continuity. The lower courts don't have a mechanism or process to recognise cultural continuity, and the industry and our democracy are choosing to keep Aboriginal people away from cultural continuity and are going to prison for their Culture.
