🔍 SolarEdge Technologies Implements Job Cuts 🔍 SolarEdge Technologies recently announced that it will cut around 400 jobs, including 200 in Israel, to regain financial stability. This follows a challenging market downturn and excess inventory build-up at the end of 2023 and the start of 2024. With over 4,600 employees before these layoffs, the company had already cut 900 jobs earlier this year. 🚀 Despite these challenges, SolarEdge is pushing forward with its growth strategy, marked by the opening of two new U.S. manufacturing plants in Austin, Texas and Seminole, Florida. Both facilities are crucial for the company, particularly due to the "domestic content" incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. However, the road to recovery seems steep with the company's stock price dropping by over 60% this year, and a net loss of $157 million in Q1. 🏭 So, what can we learn from this? I sent out a post last week asking what were the most important roles on a Semiconductor Construction Project. While everyone got their say in, the most interesting finding was the number of likes for 'Relationship Managers', While not being a defined position on our projects, it stood out based on the feedback (Likes). <rant> People posting job "opportunities" on LinkedIn and other job boards for founding engineers and CTOs that are equity only need to stop. Just stop. Let me get this straight: you've got an idea, but no shippable product, no funding, no customers. Yet you're expecting the founding engineer to do all of the work to create the entire company. And you're gonna give them a minority fraction of the equity, and no salary? C'mon man. C'mon. This isn't a job you're posting. it's a con-job. </rant>

Externally: Everything is the best! Up and to the right, hiring, releasing, added big new customer. Internally: Everything is broken, we don’t know how to fix half of it, and the other half is taking too long. Truth: Both.

Not long ago, a friend of mine, who was considering buying an electric vehicle (EV), asked me a straightforward question: “Which one should I go for—Ola or Ather?” At that moment, I didn’t know much about either brand’s offerings, their performance, or their unique selling points. But, without much thought, I suggested, “Go with Ather.” Of course, my friend didn’t stop there and naturally followed up with, “Why Ather?” I was stumped. I didn’t have a well-researched answer at hand, so I had to think on my feet. I quickly scanned my mental notes, and a simple observation came to mind that I hadn’t considered before. I said, “Just compare their job postings.” Intrigued, my friend raised an eyebrow. I explained further: “When I looked at Ather’s job postings, I noticed a significant number of roles were in research and development (R&D), often seeking candidates with PhDs—people focused on innovation, engineering, and cutting-edge technology. On the other hand, Ola seemed to be hiring more MBAs—people with business acumen, focused on marketing, strategy, and expansion.” Now, this wasn’t to say that one approach was better than the other, but it did give me an interesting perspective. Ather seemed to be investing heavily in technical innovation, trying to push the boundaries of what’s possible with EVs. Meanwhile, Ola’s approach appeared to focus on rapid expansion and business growth, ensuring they dominate the market. I shared this insight with my friend, and while it wasn’t the most technical comparison, it gave him something to think about. Sometimes, the values a company prioritizes can be reflected in the kind of talent they seek. Ather’s focus on R&D suggested to me that they might be prioritizing product excellence, while Ola’s focus on business growth could imply a strategy aimed at expanding their footprint quickly. I rest my case!
