Leadership Thoughts for Pride Month There has been a lot of backlash lately about a Navy Special Warfare Command (i.e., SEALs) Facebook post that featured the words, "NSW DIGNITY SERVICE RESPECT EQUALITY PRIDE" on a rainbow flag. Considering the "team" mentality of NSWG, I am surprised that the current NSWG leadership endorses this approach. The problem with this post is not the Navy's position on LGBTQIA+ sailors, but rather, it the the fact that we recognize them as a distinct group. This flies in the face of every aspect of our military and Navy training. We are taught and trained to look past our differences and focus on our mission. We function best as a team, not as individuals. We seek values that unite us, not divide us. HONOR. COURAGE. COMMITMENT. Those are the Navy's core values and our focus. We must not divide ourselves by heritage, education, politics, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Celebrating any grouping of servicemembers is divisive and only serves to weaken our team. Just like what made you a great “Individual Contributor” likely won’t make you a great Manager. Or how you became a rockstar Platoon Sergeant won’t necessarily be how you rock out as a Command Sergeant Major. 🤯 New roles and new industries require new and different skills. ⚓️Our warfighters – the Navy's People, Leaders, and Teams – must remain ready to fight and win.   I am thrilled to announce the release of Culture of Excellence (COE) 2.0, an approach to building great culture in every Navy command. I am incredibly proud of the work that the MyNavyHR team has done, especially the N17 team under RDML Brett Mietus' leadership.   COE 2.0 focuses on building Great People, Great Leaders, and Great Teams, knowing that this is the best way to prepare for victory in combat, innovate and solve hard problems, and prevent harmful behaviors. COE 2.0 will ensure every member of the US Navy team has the opportunity to become Forged by the Sea: becoming the best version of themselves and doing the most valuable work of their lives alongside Sailors and civilians they trust and respect.   While written for command triads and leaders at all levels, COE 2.0 is designed to be used by every member of the Navy team. Whether you are a Boatswain's Mate on the fo'c'sle of USS MASON, an Intelligence Officer at our Navy Information Operational Commands, or one of our civilian teammates working in the National Capital Region...every member of the Navy team will find value in the content.   Ultimately, we can only do these things with our asymmetrical advantage: the American Sailor. Esteemed Colleagues, I wish to discuss a pertinent issue plaguing veterans: the feeling of being misguided when transitioning from military service to civilian life. 🎖️🏢 "TRS," an introduction to civilian life, offers resources and guidance but is inherently flawed. 📚🚫 Military life, characterized by structure, can make civilian transition bewildering. Many are bereft of purpose and direction. 😧 While TRS outlines the 'what,' it fails to convey the 'HOW.' Simple or Complex The Corporate vs Military Version Corporate America: Simple-One train arriving at the train station every hour Complex- Two trains arriving at the train station every hour. U.S. Military: Simple-arriving to work on time. Complex-Coordinating 4 platoons movements while simultaneously coordinating air power, artillery, mortars and replenishment. One of the big lies in corporate America is telling you that it's harder than it looks. It is not hard and it's not complex if you've had even a small amount of operational planning training. Not only is leadership not taught but neither is planning. Sadly, I've watched a dozen managers fail because they were unable to plan for two trains arriving at the same time. Every 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps is taught planning before they arrive to the fleet and attend numerous schools throughout their career. #veteranshelpingveterans #veterans #leadership #leaders #marines

Excellent introduction to the SCC aspect of H2F. A key component is injury prevention through appropriate and consistent PT. As this program expands ultilization, it's impact will be felt down the road as injuries go down and more adaptable soldiers are developed. Combined with the other resources within H2F, the program will strengthen and improve the quality of life for service members. #H2F

He was featured in Stephen Ambrose’s book ‘Band of Brothers’ and was played by Damien Lewis in the HBO mini-series ‘Band of Brothers.’ Here are his ten principles for success based on his experience in war and corporate leadership: ✅ Strive to be a leader of character, competence, and courage. ✅ Lead from the front. ✅ Stay in top physical shape. ✅ Develop your team. ✅ Delegate responsibility to your subordinates. ✅ Anticipate problems and prepare to overcome obstacles. ✅ Remain humble. ✅ Take a moment of self-reflection. ✅ Earn respect – not because of rank/title or position, but because you are a leader of character. ✅ Hang Tough!
