On Martin Luther King Day, we at #jdatsg are reminded of the powerful legacy left by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose commitment to justice, equality, and service has inspired generations. This day provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the principles he championed and to make a positive impact in our communities.   Here are a few ways we are honoring Dr. King's legacy through service: 1) Volunteer Opportunities: Helping at a food pantry, volunteering to deliver meals to people who are home bound, contributing to a local charities, our time and effort make a meaningful difference. 2) Acts of Kindness: We know that small acts of kindness can have a big impact. Today we celebrate MLK Day, a day in which we remember the values for which Dr. King lived, and for which he died. Today is widely known as "Giving Tuesday." In this season of giving, let's remember that financial contributions are not the only form of giving. If you give your time, energy, and focus to any organization that exists for the betterment of the world and its inhabitants, THANK YOU! The support you provide, in whatever manner you give it, is so important to furthering a world that is compassionate, caring, and inclusive of all. If it were not for organizations such as Goodwill Industries International, The Salvation Army, and the US Army I would not have the opportunity to serve others in the various ways I try my best to do as those organizations have helped to pave the way for my family to create a legacy of giving, and not just through the pocket book. Please take some time today and check out my favorite organizations Til Valhalla Project and YWAM and learn about their missions and the way they serve. I firmly believe that a life of service is a life well-lived, and one that we are all called to in some form or fashion. My personal giving has come in a variety of forms: ringing a bell in the snow, standing atop a new home as the family prepares to step inside for the first time, listening as a soldier recounts the struggles there are plagued with, and in sharing my personal story so that others might learn from it and build the tools to better themselves. I remember as a youngster, Memorial Day marked the official kickoff to summer. Pools opened, and shelter houses were full of families celebrating at the park. My Grandma and Aunt would head to the graveyard to decorate the headstones of family members. Later in life, I learned that Memorial Day is a day to honor those who served in the military and paid the ultimate price. They gave their lives in service to our country, allowing us the freedom to celebrate as we see fit. Today, I’d like to reflect on one of the most underappreciated benefits we enjoy as Americans, paid for by the lives of our service members: the pursuit of happiness. For some, happiness is close at hand. For others, it feels so distant they may never find it. Since 9/11, we have lost more military personnel to suicide than in battle. Dealing with PTSD, trauma, chronic pain, and relationship challenges leaves many feeling lonely and disconnected. Loneliness and disconnection are greater risks in our society today than even during the Pandemic. Connection and belonging are vital to the human experience. So, let's take action: 1. **Make a list** of people who have made a significant impact in your life. 2. **Incorporate regular check-ins** into your routine. Make it a habit to call them frequently and let them know you are thinking about them. 3. **Leverage the power of a handwritten card or personal greeting.** The USPS is still a fantastic avenue for connection. Write a note and include a card or something that connects you with memories of happy times. Today, let's reflect on those who paid with their lives for our freedom and acknowledge those who were willing to make that commitment. Let's also make a commitment to foster the connections that enrich our lives and honor the sacrifices made for our personal freedoms. #MemorialDay #RememberAndHonor #ConnectionMatters #ReachOut
