#GobezEthiopia We must change our begger state of mind- Let’s get up and work harder After many years of observation I cane to a conclusion that Ethiopians across the economic line appear to believe that they can change their country and their society by handouts. You can clearly see this by the number of NGOs and the solicitation you get per day. It has been tried for at least 50 years. The big NGOs are doing it. The handouts from the north has taken ethiopuu it and into wars, disease and war. The people who the NGOs are begging for are considered dysfunctional and invalid. Is this really the case ? Ethiopia is a super rich country and it must feed itself. There are many things that can be done. ORGANIZE! Bring your resources together invest and build.

ONE THING I HAVE LEARNED over the last 18 months is respect for rural Somali women and men. This week concludes a string of research studies by K4Dev for organisations in #Somalia : this most recent, an #assessement for World Vision Somali office. For this study, our Somali crew and WV peers visited hundreds of powerful and ordinary people across Southern States to investigate the complex needs of rural Somalis who have fled their rural villages to peri-urban camps, and the host communities that have accommodated them. I have learned that humanitarian organisations are doing their best with scarce resources but that displaced and host communities continue doing it tough out there. Really, really tough. YET I have also been wowwed by the frankly surprising tolerance and patience of women and men from host communities as the number of displaced arrivals swamps their own population numbers; and wowwed by the emotional and spiritual resilience of displaced people who have lost everything and continue to be harassed by Islamic militants outside the towns' lines of defence. Despite these stresses, with iron resolve they peacefully strive to protect and care for each other, their children, and their wider relationships. Through past political collapse, armed conflict, drought and now floods, Somalia, as a whole, has made so much progress towards peace and prosperity over the last decade: more than I would have believed 18 months ago. Still, Al Shabaab remains potent, and now we hear of tensions between the Somali and Ethiopian governments. Two very divergent paths remain before the country and people: one of continuing progress, and the other, a new descent into hell on earth. Prayers, people. Gratitude once more to K4Dev - International Development Consultants' Somali #evaluation facilitators, Ahmed Ran, Mohamed Gulied, and Mohamed Harbi. Hugs to World Vision's supervising and advising staff and consultants, Suganya Kimbrough, Asrat Bekele, Bridget Lavine, Nina Yang, Emilie Greenhalgh Stammer, and field colleagues.

🔍 Case Study: Lessons from the Rwandan #Genocide for #MEAL Professionals in Palestine The Rwandan Genocide, starting on April 7, 1994, tragically claimed 800,000 lives in three months. The humanitarian response revealed critical failures such as overlapping #NGO work and poor quality control, highlighting the need for improved performance and accountability. The Joint Evaluation of Emergency Assistance to Rwanda (JEEAR): Seven months in, a multinational evaluation made key recommendations: - Establish Humanitarian Standards: Clear, universally accepted standards. - Independent Complaints System: A system for addressing complaints about agency performance. These recommendations catalyzed key initiatives foundational to MEAL practices today. Critical lessons include: - Standardization and Quality Assurance: Adhere to established standards for consistent, high-quality assistance. - Accountability Mechanisms: Implement feedback systems for transparency and trust. - Coordination and Collaboration: Facilitate collaboration and data sharing to avoid duplication and ensure comprehensive coverage. - Professionalism and Training: Invest in training and capacity-building for high service standards. Key Takeaways for MEAL Professionals in #Gaza: 1. Implement and Uphold Standards: Guide work with established humanitarian standards. 2. Facilitate Accountability: Integrate feedback mechanisms to enhance responsiveness. 3. Promote Coordination: Foster collaboration and information sharing. 4. Invest in Training: Focus on continuous learning and professional development. #MEAL #HumanitarianResponse #RwandanGenocide #QualityStandards #Accountability #EmergencyResponse #HumanitarianAid

✔ In the 18 months that Talk To Loop was operational in Somalia, local communities' usage of the tool proved that it can: 📲 Provide a secure and accessible channel for reporting sensitive issues. 🤝 Enable effective engagement with vulnerable or at-risk groups. 🚫 Overcome barriers to reporting. This insightful experience shows that when communities learn about an easy-to-use, safe, free, and anonymity-enabling tool that allows them to speak on their own terms, time, and language, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁. They will provide feedback on program implementation, request assistance, and share sensitive concerns. Partnerships and awareness-raising campaigns proved effective and crucial in promoting feedback and sensitive reporting, highlighting the importance of collaboration in enhancing community engagement. For example, two projects with UNICEF and the SEA Cluster. As you can see in the graph below, there is rapid and continued growth in use by communities, and we remain certain of the great need they currently have for a tool that allows them to submit feedback and raise concerns in an inclusive, safe, and adaptive manner. For a clearer understanding of the nature of the feedback and reports in the last quarter, please review our latest report: https://lnkd.in/ewEnuK6V #shiftthepower #safeguarding #localisation #Accountability #SystemsChange #AidDiversion #GBV #PSEA

With decades of experience responding to #humanitarian crises, ActionAid knows that when a crisis hits, it is often local, women-led and young people’s organisations who play a vital role in providing lifesaving & recovery services. However, these local organisations are still not treated as equals in decision making by the big humanitarian organisations (including us sometimes) and that really needs to change. We want to see a decolonising of aid and more power in the hands of local organisations, which is why we’re committed to the #GrandBargain. Together with 34 other INGOs, we have released this joint statement: https://lnkd.in/d7K-kwtx

For nearly three decades, Somalia has grappled with relentless #conflict and #instability. This prolonged crisis has not only taken a toll on the nation's infrastructure and economy but has also made it extremely challenging for the government and various actors to foster meaningful #citizenengagement. The presence of armed groups in certain parts of the country creates an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among Somali citizens. This constant threat discourages their active involvement in #community building, #governance, and development efforts. Efforts to rebuild #trust, foster #dialogue, and create #safe spaces for citizen engagement continue to emerge. International organizations, local NGOs, and courageous individuals are working tirelessly to bridge the gap between conflict and participation. 📖 Read our full brief here for detailed insights and practical solutions to enhance engagement even in challenging contexts: Engagement from the Ground Up: Challenges in Citizen engagement in Somalia. :https://lnkd.in/dZkM_rF9
