College students—the future leaders of companies and communities—need an antidote for the corrosion of dualism (seeing complex issues not as gray, but only good or bad). I would suggest empathy. The ability to understand the perspective of another is critically important, especially when you disagree with the other. Why do they believe what they believe? What is the positive thing they are trying to achieve or protect? When I teach a class, I often pick a topic—something controversial, but not so much that students will have an emotional reaction. Recently, it was the utility of public subsidies for new Amtrak service in Ohio. I gave the students background information on the topic, then asked them what they thought. They were divided into a pro and con group, often assigned to the group that argued the opposite of their personal opinion. With the debate finished, we discussed what it was like—what they learned by being forced to take the perspective of another. Then we talked about how to apply that skill while living in a democratic society. #HigherEducation #Civility #Otterbein #CoalitionForTheCommonGood

Electric buses aren’t cutting it. Over priced, not reliable, still use diesel to heat the kids… They aren’t being purchased… What is reliable, what works and is cost effective for operators and school districts is propane school buses… Give the electric bus another 14 years…buy a propane bus and lower your emissions today and get the kids to school.
Senator Aric Nesbitt tweeted (https://ow.ly/ZSg950QrQZY): @downi75 lays it all out there. Whether it’s the high costs to taxpayers or the lack of reliability, it’s clear this electric school bus experiment is an absolute failure. https://ow.ly/a61450QrQUN via Detroit News Electric school bus expansion is as silly as subsidized natural gas expansion to rural Michigan.

Did you know there are 60 local NWTF chapters, in Tennessee? 61 if you include the state chapter, according to NWTF.org. There are 95 counties in Tennessee. What's that mean? There are opportunities to grow conservation efforts statewide! How? By getting involved and creating a new chapter in areas that don't have one. We have some awesome Regional Directors working in Tennessee that can help! The link is to the Chapter Guide manual and has solid information on how to get started. https://lnkd.in/d_sGbv4M

Thanks for the insights @justicefunders. Acknowledging the stolen native lands we are on, is the beginning of the beginning of a processs to imagine pathways to repair and rejuvenation. I think incoporating the payments to a Land Trust into overhead admin costs is an excellent idea and way to systematize and normalize the giving to land trusts in our work… as part of the beginning of the beginning.

In this recently published personal story, Tara Brown, Board Treasurer and former Executive Director of Hidden Leaf Foundation, shares how the ask to pay honor taxes (such as Shuumi) stirred her to consider the decades of impact her ancestors have had on this land in the Bay Area, the original land of the Ohlone people. “This part of my family lineage exploration has been about awkward truth-telling, finding our relatedness even in its discomfort, and remembering who we are and how we belong.” Read or listen to Tara Brown’s story below. Thank you for organizing us, Justice Funders!

🔋 Exploitation in EV Plant Developments: Demand Community Benefits Agreements Now 🔋 Federal data shows that 60% of the country’s investments in EV-related facilities are in cities or counties with above-average Black populations. These placements promise economic opportunities but often lead to the disruption and displacement of Black life and culture. This is a deliberate pattern of exploitation. Communities of color disproportionately breathe in air pollution from cars. A recent University of Illinois study found that people of color face significantly higher rates of exposure to air pollution from vehicles compared to their white counterparts. Black individuals face 21% more pollutant exposure. Institutional racism, redlining, community underinvestment, and financial discrimination have concentrated minorities in polluted areas, increasing health risks. Historically, Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) have ensured developments benefit the impacted communities. Yet, Black Americans have frequently been excluded. Ford now has the opportunity to break this cycle by negotiating a legally binding CBA with residents. This agreement could ensure investments in affordable housing, local hire, workforce development, and robust environmental protections. These protections must include measures to improve air quality, prevent water contamination, and maintain soil health. Too often, billion-dollar plants intentionally target Black and brown neighborhoods with no plans for investment or consideration of the community's history or environmental impact. This exploitation must end. At A New Hope Consulting, we advocate for CBAs that prioritize justice and equity. Stand with us in demanding that these investments benefit the communities they impact. #SocialJustice #CommunityBenefitsAgreements #ElectricVehicleIndustry #BIPOC #ANewHopeConsulting #EnvironmentalJustice https://lnkd.in/gNKT6T4k
