Are Film Festivals Deliberately Excluding Working-Class Filmmakers? The film festival circuit, supposedly a launchpad for new talent, might be harbouring a discriminatory practice: mandatory Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs). DCPs, costing hundreds to thousands of pounds, slam the door shut on working-class filmmakers, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. While most modern cinemas can effortlessly play MP4 files, some festivals cling to DCPs as a submission requirement. Is this a calculated move to limit accessibility, favouring filmmakers with deeper pockets? MP4 compatibility is ubiquitous, and the cost savings are substantial. This isn't just a financial hurdle; it's a deliberate roadblock to diversity in film. DCP mandates disproportionately impact working-class creators, stifling the flow of fresh voices into festivals. Festival organisers, we need a transparent conversation. Are you clinging to DCP to maintain an exclusionary status quo? Why not accept options like MP4s that guarantee high-quality screenings while democratising access for all filmmakers. #filmmaking #filmfestivals #inclusion #diversity #democratizationoffilm

I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
Via Variety, Five Takeaways From the Joburg Film Festival and JBX Content Market - While Amazon Prime Video's exit from Africa was a setback, competition between Netflix and Showmax continues to drive investment in local content. - Yet, despite streaming investments, more financial support is needed to fully realize the continent's creative potential. - A spike in location shooting, drawing international productions - Growing interest in African animation, but the industry needs more infrastructure and investment. - MultiChoice is committed to ambitious African storytelling. Note: A key problem with articles like this is that "Africa" really means "South Africa," with one mention each of Nigeria and Ghana. It's noteworthy though that Joburg Film Festival and its JBX market are draws for major international press. Few continental African film festivals have been covered as much as I've seen of this one this year.
