FUSE Executive Fellow Erica Xavier-Beauvoir is redefining how we think about land use, sustainability, and our final resting places. As part of her impactful project with the City of Durham, Erica is bringing an intriguing concept to the table: Death Cafes. Erica’s FUSE project revolves around Sustainable Land Use in Cemeteries. It's a topic that many might not immediately associate with sustainability, but it's undeniably crucial. Traditional burial practices can consume significant land and resources, making it a thought-provoking challenge for communities looking to reduce their environmental impact. One of the innovative aspects of Erica's project is the integration of Death Cafes into the conversation. Death Cafes are safe and welcoming spaces where individuals gather to discuss the often-taboo topic of life transitions. These conversations help people gain a deeper understanding of their own mortality and explore more sustainable and eco-friendly end-of-life options. Erica's approach goes beyond just sustainable land use. By fostering open dialogues about death and sustainable alternatives, she's encouraging communities to think more holistically about their impact on the environment and their legacy. “Green Team Initiative” From Stories and Fables for Climate Age Kids #4 By William Paul – Planetshifer.com A small band of Coop workers have created the green team initiative, proposed this spring, asking that their management, members, and workers adopt an initiative calling for a comprehensive, transparent plan to address climate change at a very local level. One way that the “Coopers” can impact their carbon footprint is by forming a green team. The Coop has already stopped selling animal products, thus greatly reducing their carbon footprint. The plan, moving forward, includes a rooftop garden and expansion of the “back yard” garden where vegetable crops have been grown for many years. Other “ingredients” in the green team vision include a grey water system (i.e. – recycling dish and clothes washer water) and classes for local residents on reuse and recycling and other eco-friendly topics. # # # # The rooftop garden has a host of challenges, including the load on the roof structure, water for the plants, and planter box design and materials. The latter will re-use local untreated lumber from dismantled homes and a drainage system to capture and re-use irrigated water. # # # # The Green Team Initiative was adopted even though its tenants and vision were already in motion. For the folks who call this place a “second home,” it is also a tiny spark and a blue planet unto itself, a working, local experience as Joseph Campbell might have described as a... Beyond the courts, both NCAA and hosts are making strides to reduce environmental impact. 👏 🌱 Phoenix's organizing committee is committed to a green legacy, with initiatives like community greening events, food recovery, and waste diversion. In Cleveland, the Women’s Final Four at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will feature a Green Team and recycling efforts, building on the venue's past sustainability achievements. 🏀 While these efforts are commendable, there's still more to be done. Research shows significant carbon emissions from fan travel during March Madness. Suggestions include: regional placements to reduce travel distances and engaging universities in sustainability initiatives. 13 things I love about Forest Green Rovers (none of which involve a football) I got to meet Dale Vince OBE, founder of Ecotricity, at PurposeFest on Monday. Bizarrely, not knowing he’d be there, I had been reading his book on the train, Manifesto. And wow, I had little idea how influential he’s been to clean energy and transport - two sectors that embody the most carbon emissions. Aside from a 5/5 book recommendation let me just pull out a few nuggets from one chapter when he bought a small football club, Forest Green Rovers. Over 10 years at the club, his work is now transforming the entire sporting industry. 13 facts about the club: 1. Organic football pitch that captures rainwater and recycles for irrigation 2. Toilet waste is cleaned onsite and pumped onto the pitch to reduce water further 3. Not only is it vegan only, but significantly more popular than the old meat-based menus 4. Solar powered mow-bot 5. Reverse sugar tax in all their drinks 6. UK’s first female head of football academy 7. Stadium surrounded by wildflower borders, even has a beehive 8. A wind turbine is 1km away powering the stadium 9. Carbon footprint of the club, per attendee, is 67% lower than 10yrs prior 10. The mighty Sea Shepherd Global is blazoned on their football kit 11. They are building the world’s greenest stadium out of timber, designed by legendary architects Zaha Hadid Architects (see picture!) ... 12. ... named Eco Park, it has room for a new green business park, employing over 4,000 13. The club was the founding signatory of UN’s influential Sport for Climate Action, and FIFA named it the world’s greenest club The list can actually go on. I stopped at 13 because that’s Dale’s lucky number. At first I’m sure he was ridiculed for running a green football club. 10 years later this small football club has been a major catalyst for bringing sustainability into sport at large. Dale said of his innovative work with the club, "this is all quite easy, you just have to want to".
