New "Technology" post from THE HILL: Apple laying off 600+ in California Apple is going to be laying off more than 600 employees in California, a new state release said. According to a WARN notice posted by California, 614 employees at eight different facilities in Santa Clara County will be permanently laid off. Employees were given notice of the layoffs on March 28 and the terminations will be effective as of May 27. Apple also laid off 121 employees in San Diego County earlier this year. They will be terminated as of April 26. The news of the downsizing comes just after Apple canceled its plans earlier this year to build an electric car. First reported by Bloomberg, the company announced in February that it would be winding down its decadelong effort to build an electric car. The company’s Special Projects Group, SPG, which is about 2,000 employees, took the news as a surprise. Executives told the employees they would be moving from the car team to an artificial intelligence team. Apple is based in Cupertino, which is in Santa Clara County. The Hill has reached out to Apple for comment on the layoffs, but the company declined to comment when reached by CNBC News. Apple is also in the middle of its biggest antitrust challenge yet as the Department of Justice (DOJ) targeted the tech giant’s control of the smartphone market. The DOJ argues that Apple’s creation of the iPhone ecosystem has given the company dominance over the market for smartphones. The company is accused of creating services and products that only work best when used with Apple systems to maintain dominance across different technological devices. https://bit.ly/3U6eXTs

Apple stops work on electric car, shifts team to generative AI Apple is ending its decade-long effort to build an electric car , abandoning one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the company, Bloomberg reported citing people with knowledge of the matter. Details: Apple made the disclosure internally Tuesday, surprising the nearly 2,000 employees working on the project. The decision to ultimately wind down the project is a bombshell for the company, ending a multibillion-dollar effort that would have vaulted Apple into a whole new industry. Focus on AI: Chief operating officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the effort, told staffers that the project will begin winding down and that many employees on the team will be shifted to the artificial intelligence division under executive John Giannandrea. Layoffs likely: The Apple car team also has several hundred hardware engineers and car designers. They may be able to apply for jobs on other Apple teams. There will be layoffs, but it’s unclear how many.

The recent cancellation of Apple's much-anticipated Apple Car project, resulting in over 600 layoffs, serves as a poignant reminder of the limits of AI and the enduring value of human creativity amidst a world rapidly embracing artificial intelligence. While AI has impressive capabilities to streamline operations, predict consumer behavior, and even mimic certain aspects of human intelligence, it cannot fully replicate the depth of human creativity. Human creativity is not merely a function of generating new ideas; it's about empathy, understanding, and the nuanced interpretation of human experiences and desires, which AI cannot fully grasp or replicate. The dissolution of projects like the Apple Car underscores the crucial reality that machines cannot replace the human essence that drives innovation and creativity. As a Marine Corps veteran and engineer, I see parallels in the structured yet unpredictable nature of both the military and engineering worlds. The unpredictable element of human behavior and the necessity for creative problem-solving under pressure are aspects that AI cannot replicate. The essence of innovation, the spark of a new idea, and the ability to navigate the uncharted territories of the future will remain distinctly human. While AI will continue to evolve and take on increasingly complex tasks, the transition away from projects like the Apple Car is not a sign of defeat but a recalibration towards recognizing and valuing the irreplaceable nature of human creativity. jobs.apple.com

Never a bad idea to check the stocks and shareholder content (if you own shares) of the company you work for if you’re curious about the future of the workforce. The latest example hit today. Apple - known for rarely laying off teammates - has made some cuts today while their stocks are also down. Perhaps it’s just the beginning for them and yet it’s just a continuation for many other companies. “In a year when the tech industry has already cut almost 60,000 employees — with Apple's Big Tech peers slashing a considerable amount more from their workforce since they began layoffs in 2023 — that might not seem like a big deal. That's especially so when considering that Apple had about 161,000 full-time employees at the end of its last fiscal year. That said, the move to let go of employees at a firm that rarely makes cuts has significance.” If you have been impacted or think you might be - whether it means you’ll be taking on more work, or your job will be eliminated, or you’re a manager trying to navigate the wild world of change and transformation - there is no better time than now to engage with a certified and qualified coach. If you’re looking for a business or executive coach - reach out to me. What can it hurt to have an intro exploratory call. What can we learn about building truly innovative companies from the resurrection of Apple from a failing computer company, into the design-oriented, 3 trillion dollar company it became? Apple was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1997, when Steve Jobs returned as CEO. Upon his return, as he addressed the employees of the company he had started and been ousted from over a decade before, he asked what the problem with the company was… before anyone could say anything he gave the answer. “It’s the products. The products suck! There’s no sex in them anymore.” (His words, not mine, haha) As we discussed in our deep dive into Steve Jobs, Apple, when Jobs left, had become a company that was focused on making money and the products were a means to that end… the result was near bankruptcy. Jobs knew he needed to refocus the company on what it was always meant to be… a company that was focused on making great products then selling them at healthy margins, so that they could make more great products. But how could anyone not only save the dying company that Apple was, but also, in just over a decade, build it into the most valuable company in the world? Check out the key insights from this exploration in our last issue of 'The Impactful Capitalist' https://lnkd.in/d-zAFsQ4

Global Head of Data & Analytics • Ernst & Young, NBCUniversal • Keynote Speaker • Ultra-Runner • Sharing frank thoughts about leadership, data & business.
234.6 million iPhones were shipped in 2023 by Apple alone. This is all Tim Cook’s fault. The Cupertino company continues to thrive even when year-on-year shipments declined by 3.2%. This doesn’t happen by accident. Whilst the Tech Bros are cutting staff left, right, and centre, Tim hasn’t let the axe drop on his workforce. Here are the layoff stats from 2023: Amazon: 18,000 Google: 12,000 Meta: 11,000 Microsoft: 10,000 IBM: 3,900 SAP: 3,000 Apple: 0 Since taking over as CEO in August 2011, Tim Cook has led Apple’s share price to rise by 1,022%. This equates to over $2 trillion in market value. Staggering. How has he managed this? I believe it’s through his leadership. Often not given the credit he deserves; Tim Cook has grown Apple by: 🔹 Democratic leadership – he fosters cooperation among Apple’s talent and encourages consensus building among high-level employees. 🔹 Focus on Relationships – His tenure has been characterised by a greater focus on business & employee relationships. 🔹 Commitment to Excellence – Rumour has it he lost his sh*t when 25 computers were shipped to South Korea instead of Japan. 🔹 Trust Those Around You – Sounds obvious but he surrounds himself with brilliant people and let’s them take the lead (when necessary). 🔹 Being Humble – He never forgets where he came from & regularly visits stores and engages with customer & staff. 🔹 Admit When Wrong – Even the boss of a trillion-dollar business gets it wrong sometimes, Tim Cooke admits when he does. 🔹 Believe In What You Do – This is a key attribute of Tim’s and he put his money where his mouth is when forfeiting 1/3 of his stock based comp (~$130m over 8 years) if the stock underperformed the S&P 500! Many didn’t believe Tim Cook had the right personality to successfully take over as Apple CEO – due to his calm and passive demeanour. He has more than proved he’s the right man for the job. He stayed true to himself and didn’t try to become Steve Jobs. As a result, Apple shipped more smartphones in 2023 than ever before. I like his approach, it’s one I can identify with. 👌🏻 Shows you don’t need to be outspoken, flamboyant or go tell someone to F-Themselves, hey Elon! And yes, 1 of those iPhones was sent to me! 📲 ❓Who do you admire in a leadership position? ~~~ For more leadership insights like this, subscribe to my Lightbulb Moment’s newsletter – click the link in my profile above 👆🏻. Founder of Proven Success | I'm finding true tech partner with big goals & strong work ethic | Big fan of Alex and Leila Hormozi from Acquisition.com
Apple is the only big U.S. tech company that hasn't had major layoffs. One reason Apple keeps growing is because they focus on values like Inclusion and Diversity—creating a workplace where everyone feels included and can do their best work. The vast majority of businesses in any industry don't focus on how to take care of their people, and even when they do, they struggle to teach their teams the behaviors that align with their values. If only more people understand basic human behavior -- how we act and why we do what we do -- workplaces would be much better places to be. Want your business to grow and make more money? Start by learning how to take care of your people. Fun Fact: This also applies if you want to be a great parent to your child or even just a great person whom people are always proud to associate with.

🍏 Latest Updates from Apple: Layoffs and AI Advancements 🚀 Tech giant Apple has reportedly laid off 600 employees involved in its self-driving car and smartwatch screen projects, as disclosed by news agency Bloomberg. Both projects were recently terminated earlier this year. In compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) program, Apple filed eight separate reports to the state of California, detailing the affected employees and locations. Notably, 371 employees were released from Apple's primary car-related office in Santa Clara, with additional impacts felt across various satellite offices. Contrary to trends among other Big Tech companies, Apple's layoffs have been infrequent. Nonetheless, the company has made strategic adjustments to its hiring and spending, including the termination of about 100 contract-based recruiters in 2022. CEO Tim Cook revealed plans to leverage generative artificial intelligence (AI) for transformative opportunities during Apple's recent shareholder meeting. The company intends to unveil more about its AI initiatives at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10. Additionally, Apple is exploring partnerships with Google and OpenAI to enhance its iPhone AI features. Notably, Apple's recent research paper highlights advancements in reference resolution using large language models (LLMs), showcasing the company's ongoing commitment to AI innovation. Stay tuned for more updates as Apple continues to push boundaries in AI technology and explore new avenues for growth! #Apple #AI #Layoffs #Innovation #Technology #WWDC 🍏🚀
