Let's spill some tea. Here's the *absolutely* true story of how terrible one cruise line has handled a very basic business opportunity. My travel agency had a very, very, very popular YouTuber who wanted to partner on a hosted group trip. We have worked with smaller influencers that have sold 20, 50, 70, or even 500 guests on a single sailing. This had the potential to be as large if not larger. I was moderating an event in October and met the National Accounts director for this specific cruise line, a perfect fit given the niche we were targeting. He never returned my emails or voicemails (still to this day.) I had given it a couple of weeks before I contacted the VP of Sales for the brand. I never heard back from her specifically, but a junior BDM reached out, loved the vision, and promised to get us a group set up. Thanksgiving, then Christmas, and New Year's he stayed in touch but still couldn't get the right sign-off for this very basic group. I heard back this morning that they are declining participation because entertainment is planned years in advance. It's been 14 weeks of me chasing them to sell their product and give them free publicity in an on-brand, authentic, and collaborative manner. The best part is, the further out the sailing, the longer the benefit for the brand and the more mentions, and coverage they'd receive. The person, I won't bother calling her a professional, didn't even know the date (because we suggested they select the sailing) to be able to say when their entertainment is already booked through. We could have been open to 2030 but she hadn't bothered to ask. This isn't about me not getting my way, we have many great providers that have benefited from our partnership that would have jumped at this deal. This is about what the travel industry finds acceptable for returning answers in a business environment. This is not a unique case in the travel industry and I've named other examples in prior posts. If I had responded to a client request (to sell my product to a large group) 14 days later I would have been fired in any other industry, let alone 14 weeks. And it's rampant inside of this company, from the National Accounts Director, to my local BDM, to the VP of Sales who never bothered to respond herself. And that extends to the "Talent and Planning Manager" in the UK who couldn't be asked to make a basic inquiry before making a determination. My email response to her yesterday was met with her out-of-office. Charming. And this is why I won't ever chase a deal with Cunard ever again and neither should you. I'm shocked that this is how Carnival Cruise Line allows their brands to behave. Oh, and that influencer on YouTube has more monthly views than a mid-market TV station. I'm working on a number of affiliate / aggregator projects currently, and found myself tracking back to check out Hometogo. Back in the day I advised H2Go it was great to start with an affiliate/aggregator model. Use it to get inventory and rankings, but they'd need to transfer to an agency model ASAP as the margins in affiliates were too low. Plus... there is the lack of ownership of the customer, lack of repeat sales etc. "We have no plans to do that" I was told. Now it seems... they are 100% that model. It appears they only offer properties they have a direct relationship with and the affiliate offering is gone. Well, good to know I was right, but doesn't that undermine their whole value proposition? Previously they could claim "We have the largest inventory" becuase they aggregated all listings from all providers. Looking at their inventory now. It's pretty small. So what do they offer the user now? I use Booking.com becuase of their inventory size, deals, and membership benefits. Airbnb becuase of their inventory type and size plus the search is great. What is the unique selling point offered by Hometogo now?

How hotels generally generate business: 1. Tour operators and OTAs are great sources to generate your hotel business, but they charge high commissions and you can best compete using discounts, further cutting into your profit margins. What do you do in a situation where your competition is price matching? Do you discount even more? Pay higher commissions? 2. Then you have Google Ads, however these ads are usually effective when travellers are searching with intent eg “hotels in Kenya.” How many hotels are targeting that Keyword? How are you ensuring you get clicked on instead of your competition? Search results are usually text based. 3. SEO? Same case as above 4. Word of mouth - okay, but “ I want to travel in a few months, I don’t have money to book right now, I have the memory of a gold fish” etc There must be another way. Some way in which you can: - generate tonnes of traffic for free, - consistently communicate with interested traffic - easily convert them into guests WITHOUT needing to dish out discounts. Enter the social media funnel. It works like this: 1. Create a highly convertible website 2. Run the right strategy on social media to gain followers, retain them and have them begging to book with you. 3. Facebook ads to drive new traffic on steroids, retarget interested guests who haven’t followed you and retarget followers who want to book. 4. Send all this traffic to your highly converting website, that should have a lead magnet to get their emails. 5. Email marketing sequence to convert these leads. Boom! You just increased your direct bookings by over 20% and now your bottom line for the year is over $100k. Who’s the hero now? You are 🥹
