Lisa Jennings tells us what John Cywinski and Modern Restaurant Concepts are up to with their strategy to expand Qdoba Restaurant Corporation "The No. 2 Mexican fast casual has a long way to go to get close in size to arch rival Chipotle, but Qdoba is refranchising in a shift to the asset-light model. Qdoba Mexican Eats is doubling down on franchising with plans to double in unit count. The fast-casual chain, which was acquired by Butterfly Equity last year and merged with the now multi-brand group Modern Restaurant Concepts (MRC), has set the goal of doubling its 750-unit count over the next decade. The chain expects 40 new restaurants to open this year, with 60 planned for 2024 and more than 80 starting in 2025 and each year going forward. “Qdoba is an exceptionally well-positioned brand in one of the most attractive restaurant categories,” said John Cywinski, MRC’s CEO, in a statement on Wednesday. “We possess long-standing momentum, strong unit economics, a compelling operating model, an extraordinarily passionate guest following, and significant untapped geographic potential.” It’s not surprising that Cywinski is looking to franchisees to grow the brand. He previously led Applebee's Neighborhood Grill + Bar’s, an almost entirely franchised brand that has long advocated the asset-light model..." #entrepreneur #entrepreneurship #Restaurants #Franchise #Franchising #FranchiseChat Chainformation Franchise Pipeline Franchise Development Outsource Technomic, Inc. VP Editorial Director, Food, Retail, & Hospitality I QSR and FSR magazines I PMQ I CStore Decisions I Club + Resort
Day 2 of the FAT Brands Franchise Summit underway, with chairman Andy Wiederhorn addressing the crowd (1,600 people here, which is pretty crazy). Some stats: FAT Brands now the 25th largest restaurant group (adding nine brands to the portfolio in two years will do that). 18 brands. $2B in systemwide sales. $650M in revenue. 2,300 locations, 185 of which are corporate. 800 franchisees, about half of which are single-unit operators. A pipeline of 1,100 stores. Growth cadence of 125 openings per year or so. 267 over the last two. $750M in purchasing power. Twin Peaks working toward going public. Another acquisition likely coming in the next few months. And maybe most importantly for the world, the cookie brands, which recently went into FAT Brands’ burger chains as an offering, are being added to the remaining concepts, from Twin Peaks to Smokey Bones, etc.

What does exit strategy look like as a franchisee? For the largest Burger King franchisee, it looks like a $1 billion buyout. Carrols Corporation, who owns 1,022 Burger King locations is being purchased by Restaurant Brands International (BK parent company) for close to $1B. While the scale of this transaction is not the norm in franchising, it highlights an important concept-- franchisees have the ability to sell their franchises! Many of the clients that I speak with don't realize that selling the business down the road is an option; they see it as strictly a cash-flow focused endeavor when in reality, they are also building an asset. #franchising #exitstrategy #franchise
