The skills I hope to gain at Little Giant Ladder are to learn how to use CAD and how to test prototypes. These are both essential parts of engineering. You have to know how to use CAD to design the products. You also need to test the prototypes to know that they work and are safe. Therefore, these will be very valuable skills to learn. After completing three internships over the course of his undergraduate degree, Leonardo De La Rosa was offered a full-time position as a maintenance supervisor at Abbott—while attending the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Convention.   The mechanical engineering student will graduate in May and has accepted an offer to begin work in June 2024.   “I have been privileged to complete three internships during college, and every internship gave me a return offer for either a full-time position or another internship. I believe that one of the key factors in getting any position is connecting well with the interviewer, and I recommend always interviewing in person. Most candidates have similar backgrounds and resumes, so connecting with your interviewer can be a way of getting an edge on the hiring process. As an engineering student at Florida Tech, every class I had built off the previous one. I really liked my Modeling Dynamic Systems and Theory of Machines classes, it glued everything together for me, and I began to understand the important engineering principles. My position is very related to my degree and gives me a more than adequate head start into how machines work and how to manage people. Student clubs have also helped me outside the classroom and have been equally as influential in my preparation. I advise incoming students to be patient. I started my academic career not having a GPA over 3.0. Even though I was denied internships in my first two years, I was extremely patient, kept working hard and went to professors’ office hours. Having these experiences as I now enter my professional career, my ultimate career goal is to either have my own company or become a VP of Engineering at a company. I realize that to achieve this goal I must put in a lot of work and effort, but I know that is tangible, and I have the skills and personality to do it.” Congratulations on receiving a job offer before graduation, Leonardo!

2024 Internship Spotlight: Carter Scheer "Through this summer at my internship at Ray Martin, I have learned a lot about mechanical contracting. Through my short time at Ray Martin, I have learned how important mechanical contracting is to build a building and all the extra stuff most people don’t think about when it comes to building it. I have been mainly learning about bidding, estimating and how important communication is on every project to make it run smoothly as possible. Ray Martin has been helpful in the fact that everyone there is always there to answer questions and to give me the tools and allow me to figure things out on my own, which allows me to understand the systems a lot better. One of the biggest factors in helping me learn these systems is to be able to compare the drawings to how they are built. I’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of posts this week of great companies celebrating the great work their interns did this summer. The job skills, but more importantly the culture and industry connection and experiences they encounter shape them and help to refocus their educational and eventual career plans as they go back to school this Fall. Part of me cannot help but wonder why we seem to extend these opportunities to primarily only college students. If the skilled trades could harness that same number of potential future employees in some sort of internship, job shadow, or co-op for the summer, utilizing young men and women who otherwise would have no exposure to our mechanical/electrical/construction, what a difference it could make in so many lives and could completely flip the script on the biased beliefs that “no one wants to work anymore”. The average high school graduate can list on two hands the number of professions available, not for a lack of intellect, but our failure to get in front of them in any significant numbers to educate them on the many opportunities out there. I understand this would be a monumental lift, but I know so many people that would reach out a hand and help carry this load, that we could get it done. Sriya Garde, an electrical and computer engineering master’s student at the University of Colorado Boulder and an electrical engineering intern at ITW Food Machines wanted an internship that trusted her to be involved in real work. Through her internship, she has experienced ITW’s entrepreneurial culture through being empowered to engage in the product development process. Q: Why did you choose to intern at ITW? A: I sought an internship where I could engage in product development, from ideation to implementation and manufacturing. During my interview, I learned I would be working on new features for Hobart Mixers and Slicers, which excited me about interning here. Additionally, ITW’s reputation as a Fortune 200 company known for engineering reliable, safe, and durable systems made me eager to be part of its culture. Q: What has been your most enjoyable intern experience this summer? A: While I’ve enjoyed working on innovative projects and collaborating with incredible people at FEG, my top experience has been being a part of the Young Professionals Network (YPN). The events and initiatives organized by YPN are not only fun but also provide excellent networking opportunities with other young professionals at various stages in their ITW careers. This involvement has made me feel connected to a larger community and aligned with those on a similar journey. Q: What has been one of your biggest takeaways from your internship so far? A: The biggest takeaway has been hands-on experience with product development, particularly from an embedded perspective. Working from the ground up on a new feature for a product has been a valuable learning experience. This role has allowed me to explore, implement, and learn from my ideas, giving me a deep understanding of how systems work and the intricacies of the new product development lifecycle. Are you an Early Bird? My Master's internship UCAL Ltd. wasn't just my first job, it was a transformative launchpad into the exciting, (and sometimes very demanding!) world of manufacturing. Waking up at 4:45 AM (Monday to Saturday) for the 6:00 AM shift with my cycling buddy, Padmanaban (Paddu) was an adventure in itself. His pre-dawn pep talks and shared bike rides kept my energy high, even when the rooster crowed a little too early. Those early days were filled with enthusiastic learning. I dove headfirst into engineering drawings, eager to contribute. However, a few initial mistakes on my individual tasks – a crucial dimension missed here, a minor detail overlooked there – had a real impact on the manufacturing process. Seeing the consequences firsthand wasn't just humbling, it was a pivotal moment. It ignited a spark of curiosity within me, revealing the intricate dance between design and production. Those errors, instead of discouraging me, fueled a desire to understand the process better. This experience, with all its challenges and triumphs, was a turning point in my career trajectory. Sure, there were early mornings and learning curves, but the dedicated team UCAL Ltd. fostered an environment of growth. From my mistakes, I learned the importance of meticulousness and attention to detail. Perhaps most importantly, I discovered a passion for research in the field of design for manufacturability. When I'm not in school or working, I enjoy surfing, reading, or doing some yoga. Growing up, I watched my dad build our house, and I was always interested in HVAC since then." Why did you choose to intern at B2Q Associates? "I was excited about the variety of projects you work on and the environment here that encourages continuous learning and growth." What projects or tasks have you been involved in during your internship? "I’ve had the chance to go on-site visits, which has been incredible for hands-on learning. Seeing how each piece of equipment works in real life has been so valuable." What skills or knowledge have you gained during your time here? "I’ve learned a lot about HVAC principles and have gained insights into various other subjects, including working with AI tools." How has your internship at B2Q Associates shaped your understanding of the industry? "Working in a small company environment has been eye-opening and has made me feel more connected to the work we do. It’s influenced my desire to be part of a close-knit team in the future." What has been the most rewarding aspect of your internship? "I loved working on Electrification projects. It feels great to work on projects that positively impact our environment."
