Places for People has been addressing housing affordability in Haliburton County, ON since 2007. One of the 14 finalists in round 2 of the Housing Supply Challenge—a competition designed to address barriers to new housing supply—Tapestry is a non-profit that empowers organizations to raise funds. Working in partnership with Tapestry, Places for People leveraged their expertise to raise $850,000 in community bonds in record time - less than 3 months! This achievement, backed by over 80% local investors, positions the organization to create more affordable housing within the county. "During the pandemic, the rise in remote work created an influx of residents from large urban centres keen to take advantage of Haliburton County’s housing prices, which are still lower than in places like Toronto. The economic gap between the year-round residents and the seasonal visitors increased and with it, the area’s affordable housing challenges.
