Published today, the NCERM provides the most detailed information yet on coastal erosion risk in a changing climate. The Environment Agency is urging people to consider their #floodrisk and for society to move toward becoming more resilient. We asked members of the #CoastRNetwork to reflect on the tools and approaches available for working with communities to understand their flood and coastal risk. The first three member case studies appear today on our website, offering a range of insights from projects operating in communities around the UK. They are: ·      Cherish, which used a cross-disciplinary approach to investigate past, present and near-future impacts of climate change on coastal heritage in Ireland and Wales, raising awareness of climate change in coastal communities. ·      Clandage, which investigated how landscapes, communities and people have historically and continue to experience, cope and adapt to climate change in the Outer Hebrides. ·      Risky Cities: Living with Water in an Uncertain Climate, which utilised place-based and creative approaches for working with communities to build flood and climate awareness, action and resilience in the city of Hull. The Environment Agency’s new national flood risk assessment shows as many as 6.3 million properties in England are in areas at risk of flooding from one or a combination of sources: rivers, the sea and surface water. With climate change this could increase to around 8 million (or one in four) properties by the middle of the century. Visit GOV.UK to Check your long term flood risk for an area in England.

Board members would do well to have a look. These tools can be used for scenario planning, resilience, adaptation and insurance conversations in the boardroom.

The NCERM, produced by the EA in collaboration with local authorities’ data outputs provides the most up to date national picture of coastal erosion risk for England now and in the future. Our new coastal erosion dataset is now available. Vital information to help communities and coastal managers to be informed of their risk and form the case for the need to invest in coastal management including enabling adaptation to become a mainstream option.
